One problem swapped for another ...

... is pretty much the norm around this little corner of Dan's realm.

Here's the most recent example. Ever since I phat-phingered this little adventure into my life, I've been getting this error/failure in the startup/dmesg.

Code:

[  27.792117] swapon[879]: swapon: /dev/sda2: swapon failed: Invalid argument

[  27.792526] systemd[1]: dev-sda2.swap swap process exited, code=exited status=255

[  27.801215] systemd[1]: Unit dev-sda2.swap entered failed state.

That partition (along with the rest of them) has been recovered, (or so I thought) but the error persists.

Howz come? <....>

groovyConsole -- doesn't it support commas in for loops?

Is anyone doing much groovy with groovyConsole? I've noticed that if I make a for look with commas groovy won't accept it in the GUI console:

Code:

    int b = 4

    for (int a = 0; a < b; a++,b--) {

        //b--

        println "a: " + a + " b: " + b

    }

1 compilation error:

expecting ")" found ","  ....

then if I remove the ", b--" and comment back in the "// b-- " it works fine

Code:

a: 0 b: 3

a: 1 b: 2

But commas in the for statement are valid Java. This is with Groovy version 1.8.6 on Oracle JDK 1.6.0_31 64bit on Fedora 16. Is this a limitation in the groovyConsole?

Help with Compiz 0.9.5 on GNOME please!

I'm trying to get Compiz to work on GNOME 3.2. I sucessfully instlaled the compiz packages needed and logged out of GNOME shell and logged in with the option "Classic GNOME with Compiz"

I can get *some* compiz features working, however alot of the time when I enable/disable/change a plugin in compiz, it crashes, and I have to restart X to get my desktop back to a useable state. I went ahead and setup Compiz through GNOME shell and logged back into classic mode, compiz seems to be working fairly well, with some graphical glitches.

For example, if there is a program window open, and i close it, the program closes, but parts of (or the whole window) will remain until another program is clicked on. Sometimes i have to drag another program over the parts of the screen where the left-overs are to get them to dissapear.

Also I'm unable to get diffrent backgrounds on each of my work spaces, i'm not quite sure why.

SuDo Entry in Secure Log

I wrote a script that changes the desktop background of my gnome 3 desktop every hour using cron and it works great but I had to utilize sudo to set the session correctly and this puts a log entry in the /var/log/secure log. I use logwatch which shows me these entries daily. Its not a huge issue but I would like to turn off the logging (of this specific sudo event) to the secure log or turn it off from being reported in the logwatch email, but not turn off any other sudo event. I've been playing around with this and cannot seem to acheive this. Any suggestions?

Help with the Terminal

I know this is a beginner's question, but when I go into the terminal and I am typing a command, i never really know how or why certain arguments work and what the rules are.

An example is that i just realized that I can edit administrative files in gedit if I go into the terminal, become root, then enter gedit -s file.txt

This really was a lucky guess because when i look at the help lists, all of the commands and augments(is that what they are called?) just confuse me.

Can anyone help me out?

Help with tls and/or ssl

I have been looking for a way to secure my internet if I am going to be browsing at my local coffee shop, but have yet to find a starting place. Any help? I am a complete beginner in these areas.

https write fails

This is wierd, I'll admit. The problem was first discovered about 10pm yesterday (4/27), but obviously it could have happened earlier, but not much. So, FWIW, here's my problem.

Firefox 12, kernel 3.3.1-5.fc16.i686.PAE.

I am able to connect to an https URL, but I'm unable to write. For example, Bugzilla. I can open a new report, but when it comes time to submit, the connection is eventually reset.

The actual error message from Firefox:

Quote:

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was

loading.

The problem does not happen under Windows 7/Firefox. It also happens when talking to other sites.

Aside from the kernel being a couple of revisions old, the system is up-to-date.

One other issue, perhaps related? I attempt to post this query to the Fedora users list, and the post is returned.

Audiophile 24/96 Not Working Fedora 16

Hey guys. I'm having trouble getting any sound out of my Audiophile 24/96. I'm running a fresh install of Fedora 16 and i've installed alsa-tools and turned everything up, nothing seems to be working. Help?

Fedora 16 chmod issues??

Hi, I have just finished a clean install of Fedora 16, I have added mysql, mysql-server, php, httpd etc and rerun yum update - the system is fully functioning and upto date.

I have edited httpd.conf and set up my virtual hosts....if I add my webpages from backup I can access everything fine they all work.....

the problem comes when I want to add a new webpage/domain (www.test.co.uk) - I can add this and see it in firefox, I them add in OsCommerce Shopping Cart v2.3.1 and I can see the install/index.php but it informs me I need to change permissions on two configure.php files.

In my terminal I have done this and have checked they are changed but upon refreshing my webpage it informs me they still need changing.

Nothing I have tried seems to let firefox see the changed permissions so I can progress with installing the shopping cart.

Where am I going wrong? Is this something to do with SELinux? Firewall? the CHMOD command?

I have been going round and round the houses for hours now any help much appreciated

FC16 kernel frame buffer support has changed

The difference between a 3.1.x and a 3.4.x kernel is reduced or almost no frame buffer support

as shown by the config files in /boot. Appears that somebody is listening to the people who get stuck

with frame buffer problems. I know I disabled mine for ATI and don't have any more problems. It's

unfortunate for gaming people though.

Xfce 4.10 released

http://www.xfce.org/about/news/?post=1335571200

Quote:

In the 4.10 cycle we mainly focused on polishing the desktop and improving the user experience in various ways. Highlights of this release are:

A new application finder that has been completely rewritten and combines the functionality of the old xfce4-appfinder and xfrun4.

The panel now has an alternative vertical display mode (a deskbar). What is more, panel plugins can be arranged in multiple rows, which is particularly useful in the deskbar mode.

A new MIME type editor that allows you to easily change applications used for opening different file types. The mouse and touchpad settings dialog and the settings editor were extended in terms of functionality. The former now supports tablets in a much better way.

It is now possible to launch applications and open files on the desktop with a single click of the mouse. In addition, the 4.10 desktop can display thumbnails and automatically advance through the wallpaper list.

The window manager can be configured to tile windows when dragging them to the screen edges. The tab window (Alt+Tab) supports more flexible theming and cursor key navigation.

cant get wireless to work

hello, this is my first time posting in this forum, so bare with me.

I am running Fedora 16 on a TOSHIBA Satellite C660, but I cant get the broadcom wireless drivers to install. i have tried using the terminal via yum install, or installing with the software packages, but the result is the same. is it hardware problems or software?

because on any other machine I install fedora, it automatically comes with drivers.

Problem with M11x R3 and F16

Okay so I have installed F16 x86_64, and I have an issue. I went through the http://forums.if-not-true-then-false...php?topic=31.0, bumblebee install, for the intel hd3000 + gt540m and when I disabled neuveau and then manually installed the new nvidia 290.40 whql stable.

The stupid Nvidia manual install I wasn't paying any attention and said yes and it wrote an xorg.conf. However, it didn't work as it said Screen 0 not found device not found. So right now I made it xorg.conf.old and deleted the xorg.conf file.

I ran Xorg -configure and merge the generated the xorg.conf.d files with the one found in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory. It worked and everything booted up except I am running no graphics driver.... Because Gnome 3 goes into fallback mode.

(I would have posted URLs to paste bin but they are blocked and not allowed/limited. I then decided to post the logs and the config file but couldn't because of line limits....so if someone wants to hopefully help I would love it!)

I need help with figuring out how to add like a Nvidia xorg part in xorg.conf.d directory. I don't understand the numbering of the config files.

Backing down specific (set of) packages?

In particular, using the GUI, (either package kit, or yumex) I'd like to rollback Firefox -- and if that doesn't fix the issue -- Network Manager from the last series of updates.

I get a little nervous using Yumex for this, in that I've never found a way to have it only downgrade specific packages. It always wants to roll-back the whole flippin' shebang.

So ... am I missing something here? Is this possible (in GUI) in either yumex, or packagekit (Thusly having dependencies handled correctly)? And if so ... how?

GNOME 3 fallback problems

I recently installed F16 64bit on my laptop to use for work. Because of my passionate dislike of GNOME 3 (plus the fact that Cinnamon isn't quite stable yet), I'm running GNOME in fallback mode. I used dconf-editor to change up my panels so I have just one with order menu bar, window bar, notification area, clock, user menu. When I say "window bar," I mean the area where your open programs are displayed and you can click on them to bring them up (like on windows).

When I booted up Fedora yesterday, an error box popped up, asking me if I wanted to delete something. I didn't recognize the name and accidentally hit "delete." I figured out now that I deleted the "window bar." I can't remember what that's actually called, and dconf-editor doesn't list it anymore under org/gnome/gnome-panel/layout/objects. I havn't been able to figure out how to get back the window bar. I've reinstalled gnome-panel and gnome-shell. I figured I could just completely reinstall gnome, but I don't want to have to deal with that.

Can anyone tell me how to display my "menu bar" again? Thanks in advance for any help!

So Close to Getting PDAnet to work on Fedora 16 over USB!!

Hello folks.

I am so close to finally getting this to work, I thought I would post here so maby you guys can think it over and test it and see if we can finally figure this out.

PDAnet is an application for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. It allows you to tether your phone to a computer for free, either over wifi, usb, or bluetooth.

Now PDAnet will work over Bluetooth or Wifi (ad-hoc) in fedora, no problem without much configuration.

to get it to work over wifi you make a ad-hoc connection and configure the DHCP to "Automatic" or "Automatic (addresses only)" from "shared with other computers" and it will work fine over the Wifi Client in PDAnet.

Now I have yet to find someone be able to get it to work over USB so far...

I have been messing around with it, and am SOOO CLOSE to getting it to work. Thought I would post it here so maybe someone would know whats missing.

Okay so this is what I did.

Your Fedora installation should have usbmuxd.

If not, check, and become root at type in the shell

Quote:

yum install usbmuxd

Install it if it isnt already.

now you are going to need another application called "umux2007"

which can be downloaded here http://xzrq.net/umux2007/umux2007-0.0.1.tar.gz

Extract that file to the download folder or another folder of your choice. (Remember the path)

cd to the path you extracted the file to.

After the file is extracted, and you change directory, you must go on your phone in the PDAnet application and press the "usb client" so it will be ready to connect.

in the terminal type

Quote:

./install

Quote:

umux2007.py

while in the path I told you to change directory to (cd)

it will probably say, error because of a missing module called "twisted.internet"

so install the package called "python-twisted-web" & "python-twisted-web2"

Quote:

yum install python-twisted-web python-twisted-web2

that will make it so you no longer get that error.

now redo the umux2007.py command.

Quote:

umux2007.py

which will give this read-out

Quote:

2012-04-29 13:41:17-0400 [-] Log opened.

2012-04-29 13:41:18-0400 [-] usbmux connected (fd 6, pid 20993)

So now you will be connected, and it will even show on your phone in the application that you are connected. (you will see what I mean as you do it.)

I have also read that you must go into firefox in "about:config" and enable the boolean "network.dns.disableIPv6"

and in the terminal as root, type

Quote:

ip addr del ::1/128 dev lo

since gibl thinks it has IPv6 interfaces.. which it doesnt.

To disconnect you can either press "off" on the application on the phone, or you can press "cntl + c" while on the terminal where it says connected. This will disconnect and give a read out.

Now everything should be working now.. Its connected both on the computer, and in the application.. but yet its still not letting me search the web unfortunately... :(

So maybe someone here knows whats up, or notices a mistake here. or can play around with it themselves and let us know about anything they figure out.

Thought Id let you guys know, since I see this question a lot.

Keep us updated, and I will as well.

Take care everyone.

Peace, Love and Linux.

Realcrypt/Truecrypt Permission error?

Hello everyone,

While the concept of realcrypt permission denied has been touched upon in these posts:

(I had this problem too, and by reading these posts, I solved it.)

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=234318

http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/sho...d.php?t=246947

forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=241756&highlight=realcrypt+mount (See post 7 and 13, especially 13.)

I would like to state the solution. My solution worked in Fedora 15.

Note that this guide assumes you have realcrypt and you can access its windows.

1. Go to the top bar and click on settings.

2. Click on preferences.

3. Go to mount options tab.

4. In the textbox to the right of mount options, type your uid and gid (If that does not work, type the uid ONLY. That's what I did, and it worked.)

To find the uid and gid, try something like vi /etc/passwd or nano /etc/passwd .

The uid and gid is in: username:x:uid:gid: (...more is on this line)

username is your username, and uid and gid are self-explanatory.

integrated webcam not recognized; causes system crash

Hey,

I am using Fedora 16 64 bit (KDE) on a Samsung RV520 with the nvidia drivers. In older kernel versions, my webcam was working perfectly. Since the newer kernels, I cannot use it anymore. Everytime a program trys to contact the webcam (like kamoso, skype), the window which should contain the video from the camera goes black. I cannot do any actions with the keyboard or mouse, so the system seems to be frozen. Sound is still working (so, for example, music running in the background continues to play) and, for example, the clock is still working. Sometimes, an error message saying "a problem in the kernel package has been detected" is showed, but I cannot read what it contains, because mouse/keyboard are not working. The only way to use the computer again is to power off manually and boot again.

lsusb and lspci do not show an entry for the webcam, but the webcam is working with Windows.

The issue was already partly discussed in this thread:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...45#post1573045

Also, some people seem to have a similar problem and reported it to bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=815134

And here is another thread (without any solutions) in which a similar problem is reported:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=278453

I appreciate any kind of suggestions :-)

Reset corrupt xorg config for local user on fc15?

Hi,

After struggling with the xorg config for my Radeon card and incorrectly thinking it was a driver that was causing my display problems, I created a new user and logged in as that user to see if that fixed the problem, and the display was normal. How can I "reset" the xorg configuration that's apparently corrupt for my default user?

I'm using fc15 x86_64. Some time ago I configured the "fallback" gnome3 config, but can't remember. With the creation of the new user, it's back to the regular horrible gnome3 settings. How can I set this user to also have the fallback config?

The problem is the upper third of the screen is black and inaccessible by windows (xterms, firefox, etc), but I can still access the "Applications", "Places", the clock, etc.

Thanks,

Dave

grub-install: command not found

Wanting to create a distro based on Fedora 16

Hi,

I'd like to build my own Linux distro based on Fedora 16. I don't want to make a "custom spin" though. I'd like this to be somewhat of a fork that wouldn't contain any Fedora references (like CentOS, or Scientific Linux). It would host a collection of programs that I'm building and install the OS and my programs on to the workstation.

Right now, I would like the base OS, basic CLI, no GUI or fancy stuff. I just want a lot of the functionality that Fedora has (systemctl, RPM, YUM, file structure, etc).

What would be the best way of going about this? I thought about using LFS for this, which would work, but I don't have the functionality I want and I'd like RPM to be a big part of the way I'd distribute updates.

Any help would be great!

Trying to figure out if this is a wine problem or an F17 problem...

So a few days ago wine was updated to 1.5.2, and shortly after that I discovered that when I was trying to play a game in Wine, my mouse pointer bugged out and started teleporting all over the screen, making it impossible to do much of anything.

I'd had this problem before, so I assumed it was a wine regression, but then I remembered back in my ubuntu days that it was identified as a bug in xorg-server. There's a new posting of the (ubuntu) bug listing here, for reference:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/948938

So I'm trying to figure out if a recent update to xorg-x11-server in F17 could have introduced the same problem. Does anyone here know? If not, what's the best way for me to try to track that down? I'm still trying to find where everything is. What does Fedora use as its bug tracker?

Two battery icons in notification area F16 Xfce

I installed the Xfce spin on my laptop to replace the standard Gnome version because it runs better on it's lowend hardware. Everything works fine, except I had the Gnome 3 battery and pulseaudio icons in my system tray along with the default Xfce ones. I removed the pulseaudio package and got rid of that one, but the battery icon seems to be a dependency of GDM. I removed it and installed Slim and while that got rid of the unnecessary icon it also removed my ability to shutdown and reboot from my logout options. Is there any way to either stick with GDM and get rid of the gnome battery icon or use Slim and get my full logout options back?

need help.xinput command and logitech g300

hi everyone,

i am new to fedora and linux in general and some things do still drive me crazy.

before trying out fedora i had kubuntu installed and the problem is that i use a logitech g 300 mouse with copy and paste functions.

without adjusting it the courser jumps over the screen when pressed.

in kubuntu i only had to open the terminal and type:

xinput list

than see which number the mouse had and than type:

xinput set-mode XX RELATIVE

what are the commands for xinput list and xinput set-mode XX RELATIVE here in Fedora?

thanks in advance!

---------- Post added at 07:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:37 PM ----------

it is weired to answer myself but in hope to help logitech users in the future here is what i did.

i downloaded the kde plasma design just because i like it better.

now i can use the old xinput list line again without a problem.

must have had something to do with the other 'gnome' layout.

please correct me if i am wrong since i am completely new to linux with a very limited knowledge of how computers work.[COLOR="Silver"]

Gnome questions

Just installed Fedora 16 via the Live CD. Everything seems to be fine except for the desktop configuration. How can I configure Gnome to be more "traditional"? I just want a simple menu system with the icons for any running programs at the bottom of the screen, along with the "system tray" on the lower right. How can I set that up?

Also, I've noticed that various application windows do not have a "minimize" and "maximize" button or a system memu on them. All I see is the "X" button on the upper right. This is likely a window manager question and not strictly speaking a Gnome issue, but what happened to those buttons?

Thanks!

Phil

xguest not showing up on GDM.

I'm new to Fedora and I'm using F17/Xfce.

One of the first things I did to 'acclimatise' was remove selinux. Then after I got more familiarised with the system I decided to install xguest, which brings selinux back.

xguest never appeared as an option in GDM and I thought it was because I had selinux disabled (xguest requires selinux in enforcing mode to work).

I did all this in a 'not in a hurry' pace. So one day I installed xguest/selinux, other day I set selinux to permissive mode (and made sure the relabelling was all fine) and today I set it to enforcing mode.

But xguest still doesn't show up as an option in GDM.

KDE version looks good

Hello all :)

I'm properly impressed with 17 beta KDE. I've been using Linux full time for a little over two years, got Debian stable on one computer, I'm happy with that, but I'm now looking for a KDE distro with newer software for my work computer. Tested a bunch, and decided to install Fedora once the version is final. Little - and some not so little - things that were buggy in other distros under KDE work well in Fedora, so I'm either lucky with those instances or it's actually a solid distro :) plus, I don't think I've seen such good font rendering in Linux before, or Firefox so well integrated into KDE.. last time i tried Fedora I was new to Linux so even setting up codecs was a struggle.. this seems very different.

so here's why I post this: considering that I've been using this beta on a test computer for a short amount of time, I'd really appreciate the insight of anyone who's been using the KDE version on a daily basis, preferably for work. Their thoughts on the distro's general usability, stability, and so on. I know it's a very broad question, but I don't mind broad answers, that can still give me valuable info.

Thanks a lot and apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

[SOLVED] Where is final TC1?

Anyone have an idea where final TC1 is? It was supposed to get built yesterday according to the schedule and the FESCo meeting.

Graphene lenses for electrons

Do I really need Network Manager?

I manage RHEL servers at work. I configure interfaces manually by jiggering around with the scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.

But that's not what I'm asking about. I just want to provide some bona fides.

My Toshiba laptop has been happily running Fedora since F13. I used preupgrade to seamlessly upgrade to F15, and a few months back to F16.

A week or so ago, the wireless link began to flake on me. KDE Deamon would request access to the wallet, and I'd be asked to type in the "secret" for my wireless network. I couldn't actually get this to work, so I'd reboot. This became more and more common and last night I thought I'd remove and reinstall the connection.

Since I knew how to muck with those config scripts . . . how hard could it be?

Well, two concatenated words: NetworkManager. Wrapped around my laptop's network devices like Borg Implants around Jean-Luc Picard's amygdala.

In /var/log/messages I see my laptops's wireless interface get recognized, assigned wlan0, and then declared "managed" and made unavailable.

I've tried using NetworkConfiguration GUI, but I just can't get wlan0 to the point where it can find my home network.

So . . . what's easier? Learning the convoluted muck of NetworkManager, or uninstall it and try to get it working manually?

The only "gotcha" is that this is a wireless connection, and I suspect that NetworkManager is providing the "hey, there's your wireless network, I'll take care of connecting and providing the right keys" service.

Moserial won't send a file

I'm trying to use moserial to upload and download ASCII files to and from a Mitsubishi Meldas 64 CNC controller.

I have no issues downloading the files, but I can't seem to get moserial to recognize the controller for uploading. The pop up just gets stuck at "Waiting for remote host" and then closes the pop-up.

Any insight into where my problem might lay would be appreciated.

Printer not Working

Hello. I have been using Fedora 16 for a few months. I was using the standard distro, but after needing to reformat my hard drive, I installed Fedora16 Design Suite instead. When I was using the regular version, My printer (HP Deskjet f4590) worked just fiine without needing to install anything extra. I plugged it in and it worked fine. Since I've been using 16DS, it hasn't worked. I have tried all kinds of driver, and the hplip, and it still won't work. My computer recognizes the printer, but every time I try to print, it tells me it's not connected. Does anyone know what's going on?

I rebooted to a installation fedora 15 cd, and I get bash, but I have to say thats how far I get. I would like to get my hands dirty on this, cause this happens quite frequent when trying and installing distros, always something screws grub.

I get the following message:

The certificate on the secure gateway is invalid. A VPN connection will not be established.

I can also connect to this vpn at an office. When I am there I get a certificate problem notification, but, I have the option of ignoring it.

Is this something that is being done by the firewall? Can I add this gateway as an exception if it is?

TIA

wget when full file name not known

I'm trying to automate a daily file download that I have to do via remote desktop by using wget in a cron job. However, I don't know the full file name without checking manually (it changes every day). The format is the following: http://blip.tv/file/get/Demnow-DemocracyNow[day of week][month][day][year][random garbage characters].mp4

I can use the date command to get that information, but there's no way to figure out the garbage characters except manually (they change each day, unpredictably). They don't affect anything, so I tried to use a wildcard, but I can't find a way to make that work. How can I automate this?

Don't tell Debian but...

Last night I decided to leave my 3 year old Debian install for Fedora. Same install mind you. It was just a spare of the moment thing. I had used Fedora back in the day when either Fedora Core 1 or 2 was around. I can honestly say Fedora Core was the first distrobution I had ever sucessly installed. I can see a lot of things have changed.

So anyways, I few questions came to mind that I wanted to ask. I could always of course look them up myself and I've found the Fedora wiki to be very helpful but then I would have no reason to conversate with all you fine people. :D

I've been reading a lot of different methods to installing a minimal base system. Pherhaps there is an option in the full DVD install? I just can't be bothered downloading that large of an image. Is there an offical way to install just the core system? I'd like to build my Fedora system by picking and choosing instead of having all of these meta packages installed.

I'm using the KDE spin of Fedora. To be honest, I've just started using KDE. I've been a XFCE guy for a while but decided to try it and I just never left. How well is the KDE side of the distrobution maintained? Better than most? Just a much as the default GNOME? Besides the unwanted application such as the alarm clock, I'm rather impressed with the install. A few distros have been known to just drop their support for certain desktop environments. I would hate to see that happen. I'm sure you all could reasure me however. :C To put it simply, GNOME being the default environment in Fedora has me sitting a little bit on the edge. Tell me there is nothing to worry about. Ha. I just don't see myself using GNOME 3.

Back in the day Fedora was always known as the bleeding edge distrobution. How true is that now today? Not that I mind bleeding egde of course. Fedora's rawhide comes to mind. Would an everyday user like you and I use it? Does it ever release? Is it anything close to rolling? Again, I'm sure I could look this up but just for the sake of conversation.

Compared to aptitude and apt I'm actually enjoying using yum. The ability to downgrade a package without jumping above and beyond?! This is good stuff. One question comes to mind. The commands 'yum remove package-foo' and 'yum erase package-foo'. Is there a difference? Coming from Debian this looks very similar to the remove and purge commands. What does the avaerage user use?

Fedora obviously releases. This is every 6 months, correct? How are users experience upgrading to release after release? I do not want to be the guy to have to reinstall every time. That would be an absolute deal breaker for me. Again, I'm sure I can be reasured although I would like honest experiences.

If anything else comes to mind I'm sure you guys will hear about it but at this point in time I can say that I like blue and fedoras are starting to grow on me.

Wine 1.4 took ~8 hours to compile from source.... is that normal?

I went out to winehq and grabbed the latest source code for the stable 1.4 release of Wine today. It took my computer roughly 8 hours to finish compiling this software. Below are my computers specs....

OS: Fedora 16

Kernel: 3.3.0-4.fc16.i686

Ram: 4gb

Processor: AMD X2 6000+

I just feel that the time it took to compile this software was somewhat outrageous. My hardware was not anything bad in my opinion so that fact that it took this long made me concerned about my machine.

Does this amount of time seem reasonable? Anyone have any ideas what may be causing the slowness on my machine? I am open to all ideas and responses.

Thanks everyone!

Installing F16 to SSD, (re)formatting parameter issues

Hi,

I'm having trouble to install F16 to an SSD. My main goal is to have the ext4 filesystem for the / partition to be created with some specific parameters that (should) help to align filesystem specific structures better to the erase block sizes of my SSD.

My first attempt was to partition the SSD myself and create an ext4 filesystem as intended for the / filesystem: (It's the -E parameter that's supposed to be important if /dev/sda2 is properly aligned in the partitioning too)

mkfs.ext4 -v -b 4096 -m 2 -E stride=128,stripe-width=128,resize=70G /dev/sda2

after doing this...

when I go through the livecd "installation to harddisk" procedure, I can not get F16 to install to this partition, it insists that it want to re-format the partition I chose (/dev/sda2) to use as /

When i give in and let the installation tool reformat (to ext4) the partition I can not find any option to add my (-E) parameters to the issued mkfs command that is run.

Is there a way to install to a preformatted filesystem, or a way to add parameters to the mkfs that is done from the installation tool GUI?

Epson V350 scanner not detected by iscan etc

Hi

I had problems with this on FC14, but it was a filed bug.

I've loaded the iscan data and the iscan app from the Ayasi site

and the device is not detected by any of the scanning apps.

lsusb shows the device

iscan-2.26.0-3ltd7.x86_64 is loaded, the later version 2.28 will not install,

and the tarball fails to build with error:C++ compiler csnnot create executables..

I can't believe a bug filed on FC14 is still open , has anyone got one of these Epson scanner to function with FC16 ???

TIA

lowmem_reserve[] 0 0 0 0 issue

Hi;

Not sure if this is the right forum to post a fc14 Kernel related question.? But below is the issue I see on our system:

Configuration:

Kernnel Liniux 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686

GNOME 2.32.0

We have total of 2GB RAM

This is 8 CPU IBM server with 2 PCI express slots.

IN both PCI express slot we have 10G dual port Brocard 1040 cards

When system boots it shows 6 ports, 2 on Mother board and 4 on the PCI express (10G)

System is used for bridge control (brctl and tc) like a man in moddle configuration.

Issue seen is lowmem_reserve[] 0 0 0 0 when we run traffic we start to see:

Intellinet 150N wireless Mini USB adapter not working

I have fedora 14 (i dont have 15 and 16 is too resource intensive) installed on a 4gb flashdrive. It has an issue. My pc has a Intellinet usb wireless adapter, and fedora is either not detecting it, or simply not having the right drivers for it. I have looked around on the internet and came up with this, but it is for ubuntu and i am not sure if it would work, or if it would just screw up my set up.

Can anyone tell me if the bash code is safe, or if there is a better solution?

Google CR-48/WiFi very slow

The wifi card in a CR-48 is the Atheros AR928X, or so lspci tells me.

Pulling up pages, it is much slower than my Windows machine. In pulling up fedoraforum.org, there was a fifteen second difference. Sometimes, a page won't come up at all unless I stop the load and refresh.

Is there anything I can do to optimize?

[SOLVED] Thumb drives and TRASH

I am having an odd issue with my thumb drives. I can add files to them, but cannot delete files from the thumb drives.

As a (non-administrator) user, when I select to delete a file on the thumb drive, it moves the file to a hidden trash folder (.Trash-1000) on the thumb drive. So the end result is the file disappears but still is occupying space on the thumb drive.

As root, I can delete the file (or directory), but then the thumb drives are endlessly busy and umount is not clean.

Anyone else seeing this odd behavior in F16 Xfce?

Hello. I would like to be able to make my own games in Fedora 16. I used GameMaker when I used Windows 7. Is there any similar program for Fedora 16?

Question for those running open-source video drivers

Especially those running mobile computers, especially laptops/netbooks and the like.

How do you find the open-source drivers of your chip vs the proprietery blob? Part of the reason I ask is i've had two portable computers, a Sony Vaio and now this ASUS EEEPC netbook. Both machines run an ATI GPU, both were Radeon HD but different models.

My experience, especially trying modern desktops like Unity and Gnome-Shell is that with the open source drivers, desktop usability, as in speed and responsiveness, is fine. With the proprietery drivers, things get noticably less smooth and laggy.

HOWEVER, the open source drivers whilst providing a smoother desktop experience, did not seem to be able to run HD videos as efficiently (nor any 3D games obviously) and ran both my machines easily 10-15c hotter :dis: Of course this in turn can give worse battery life, although using something like PowerPlay Switcher and turning on a power saving power_profile can help with that a fair bit. But the temperatures difference and the fact the machines are noticably louder as they try to cope is a fair turn off.

So this is a pretty small sample experience to go on, but it seems to me that new users will be better off in terms of desktop smoothness when using the often default "open-source" drivers but the machines might suffer heat and battery problems, which is not great but especially with ATI, the proprietery blobs can be less than ideal. I'm not too sure on how NVIDIA are, but I think Nouveau are meant to be quite decent, but I don't know how the power management is.

With my current netbook, as the heat and loudness of the fans annoyed me and I wanted to run HD videos smoothly, I decided to run with the proprietery Catalyst driver but use a very lightweight WM like Window Maker, where performance is so good it doesnt matter what driver I'm running :D and my HD videos and temps are fine.

My thinking is that a desktop computer might not be as noticable in terms of heat and the open source drivers are probably fine for general desktop use, but I don't have a lot of experience.

Issues connecting to smb NAS

Heyas

After i had refused to try further by experiments, how to connect to my iomega network storage, i browsed for a solution.

2 of those many pieces were:

http://dreambox.funfiles.cc/index.ph...&postID=146167

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-to...der-linux.html

Both of them refer to use a mount command similar to:

Code:

# mount -t smbfs -o username=usr,password=pw //ntserver/download /mnt/ntserver

However, i run this:

Code:

for NETFS in cifs nfs smb smbfs;do

    sudo mount -t $NETFS -o rw,soft,username=usr,password=pw  //192.168.10.110/Shares /mnt/nas && break || dmesg|tail

done

ping -c 1 192.168.10.110

And get:

Code:

virtual box networking

i need to connect a windows XP as a guest(in virtual box) with fedora 16 as a host so that wired connection icon(in top bar)shows that connection is established.

how could i do this?

in windows xp the icon of network connection is lights up,whereas in fedora it did not!!!

in fact i want to establish such connection without any physicall connection, but in a virtual connection.
