Cannot get Fedora 16 to boot past a screen with the following information on it.

Fedora will act like it is booting normally, then it will go to a black screen with a multi blue and white animated stripe across the bottom with Fedora 16 on the right side, then before the stripe moves all the way across the screen it will popup to a black screen with the following message:

"Please enter passphrase for disk Hitachi_HTS545032B9A300 (luks-76aec453-d13d-4be1-b328-7595dce3e8a4) on /home!:

If I enter my password, this is what loads:

If I don't enter a passphrase, the following pops up:

"Welcome to emergency mode. Use "systemctl default" or ^D to activate default mode. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue)

This is as far as Fedora 16 will boot for me. From a powered off state, it will start booting up and it will get to a black screen with this info on it and thats as far as it will boot.

I am fairly new to Linux and this is my first time using / installing Fedora, but so far other than this little mishap I am loving it.

So any help that you can give a Noob on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Need help installing on UEFI system

I'm trying to install F17 on a new HP box with UEFI. My disk layout is

/boot/efi 256M EFI System Partition

2M BIOS Boot

/ 32G EXT4

/sl6 32G EXT4

/home 183G EXT4

On my first install the installer didn't demand a BIOS boot partition, after install it booted to a blank GRUB command line. On the next install it demanded a BIOS Boot partition. After that install the system sees no boot devices at all. I've tried putting the boot loader into both the MBR and into the root partition (the only two options offered by the installer), it makes no difference.

I've tried SL6.2, Fedora 16 and Fedora 17 Beta. Is there any way to get Linux to boot on a system with UEFI?

Install Linksys WMP54GS

[Temporary Solved] nautilus crash, desktop unusable :(

Dear all..

So yesterday i decided to update my system, but didn't restart.. After I opened my PC today, I was greeted with the following message:

A problem in the nautilus-3.2.1-2.fc16 package has been detected

Then, cant see anything, not even the toolbar, except the background and conky running.. And ofcourse, because of this problem, GNOME3 is not unusable, even Cinnamon..

I'm currently logged in with META desktop environment temporary, is there any solution for that problem?

PS: Dunno which extra details I should provide, please ask for any ^^

---------- Post added at 03:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:23 PM ----------

Ok.. so i was looking around and figured out a temporary solution for this problem.. While searching over the net, someone mentioned something about issuing the command "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lub/libGL.so.1 nautlius" from terminal.. Did that, the desktop loaded, but without any decoration.. so I thought it might be nVidia problem, not nautilus.. So I issued the command:

yum remove *nvidia*

restarted, and I'm back to Cinnamon again :)

Services, if they wont stay disabled

We alll know the BLAME GAME, but its kind of annoying to disable services, just to see them to be started at next reboot anyway.

Or even worse, boot time takes longer than it previously took.

I have this script which should do the most work, but as of now, but i have a few questions, as i ran into an unusable system serveral times (due to several services that must be loaded).

(Replace sT, sP, sE with echo)

My main question are the following 4 tops, which make 4/5 of the total effective boot time, or 50% of accumulated boot time.

Or, in other words, why the heck to these 4 services take so much time?

* Udev still is a hughe ? to me.

* All of the fedora*-services i'm disabling by default, as they're mainly for LVM which i dont use.

* Why does enabling 6? virtual consoles take so much time? (systemd-vconsole-setup.service)

* Finaly, remounting rootfs shouldnt take 2.5 sec,as /home just uses ~400ms but beeing 10 times larger.

is my video card working?

I've been using onboard video, installed F16 64 a couple days ago, followed leigh's driver instructions, and want to see if the video card is working.

I'm asking because the videos do look a lot more clear (maybe that's due to F16), but still seem to still be bogging down a little.

Power saving on laptop

My new laptop has a lower battery life than expected.

Even if I disable wireless the life is shorter that I think it should be. I think one reason for this could be that it has two hard drives in it. I would like to completly power down the second drive. Is this possible? I do not want to take the drive out as the laptop is in warrenty.

Catalyst Drivers

Fellow ATI users, I have decided never to buy an ATI chip again. That being said, I have to deal with what I currently have.

I installed the latest ATI driver on Fedora 16 via rpmfusion, and noticed what many others did: it is very unstable, and borderline unusable. I did not have the login issues that many others had, but Gnome would continually kill and refresh.

Unfortunately for working with Autodesk Maya, Mudbox, and 3D coat, I really need to have an ATI driver installed. For the time being, I've decided to go back to Fedora 14. For obvious reasons, this is not the best choice. I am only able to update my software to a certain level.

I'm tired of formatting over and over just to be disappointed, so before testing my latest theory I wanted to ask the fedora collective: Do you think I would be able to run F16 with my catalyst driver if I used a different desktop environment? Gnome is great, but I'd be just as happy with xfce.

No Virtual Terminals with nvidia proprietary drivers

This is a long-standing problem. With the nouveau drivers, VT's work fine. With the nvidia drivers installed, no VT's. Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

Installing the flash plugin *still* doesn't let me watch youtube videos.

Hi, I just installed Fedora 16 and am using Firefox.

When I go youtube, at the top of the first page it says "You need to upgrade your adobe flash player to watch this video".

I can't watch any videos on youtube.

So I go through the process of installing it, installing the adobe-release-i386-1.0-noarch.rpm file, everything works out fine, it installs perfectly.

I rebooted my laptop, and go to youtube, and it still says the same thing "You need to upgrade your adobe flash player to watch this video." as though I never even had it installed.

Is there something else I can install?

Re: Rancid (Really Awesome New Cisco confIg Differ)

I am a newbie with linux(fedora). I have configured RANCID on Fedora 16 and using ViewVC. I am able to do the back up of devices and able to view them using ViewVC.

My question is there any way I can force rancid to run a backup even if the config doesnot change. I would like to have a monthly backup of my network devices even if the config has not changed.

mmass 5.0.1 and python 2.7.3-1.fc16

Hi folks,

Having installed the "mmass" mass spectrometry software via the mmass repo (available here), I am now trying to launch the software. Unfortunately, I am currently greeted by the following message: "A problem in the python-2.7.3-1 package was detected".

I have performed software updates and believe I am running the most up-to-date stable python release (2.7.3-1.fc16).

Is there a way by which I can perhaps repair or reinstall python so that this software can work?

Note: I've downloaded and installed the same software using Ubuntu 12.04 without issue, so I guess it's something to do with my Fedora installation as opposed to mmass itself.

All the best,

Problem with network in Fedora 16

Hello, I'm new in these forums and I'm here because I just can't find anything that solves this problem...

The thing is, that anything I do, any tutorial and any guide I've seen so far, doesn't simply help to get this thing to work...

I even followed the one posted here (for Fedora 15) but without any luck...

My question is: is there any guide, walkthrough or anything about correctly configuring a network with Fedora 16?

I can't even see my own host in the Network with Nautilus...

Or at least had anyone got this working with Fedora 16?

System will not boot

I'm using Fedora 16 with XFCE desktop

I was attempting to install LibreOffice3.5 I could not find it in GUI Software installer, so i downloaded the RMP version. I followed the instructions in the readme file for commandline installation. There was an error which told me to try skip-broken option.

I did that. Then I installed the Desktop-integration

Then I went back and ran yum install *.rpm and the rest of the previously uninstalled pachages appearently installed because i got no errors.

I did not see LibreOffice in my menues.

The next time i rebooted the system It locked up midboot up.

Attached are:
  • Last saved working boot log (boot.log.

  • The last boot log (/var/log/boot.log-20120506)

I was able to boot to falisafe and tried uninstalling libreoffice3.5 with yum uninstall.

No change--still won't boot..

I have openSUSE installed on another partition, but Fedora is my main system that I like to use.

Anyone know what's up with it?

How to specify custom removable media handler...

In Gnome2, it was a relatively simple affair to specify a custom script to be run upon mount of a device (e.g., camera in this case).

Perhaps it's still simple, but it's not obvious.

Is it possible to specify one's own script to be invoked upon mount? ...in this case a device w/ photos.

I don't want to use shotwell.

The Removable Media settings app no longer permits specification of an arbitrary program.

Ooops, almost forgot..., on F16.

P.S.: To be fair..., I don't know that it's a Gnome component specifically that I'm asking about...

Fedora 16 - Disable Automatic Grub Updates

I am fairly new to Fedora, and Linux in general. There may be an easy solution to this, but I am not quite certain. How can I disable my Fedora machine from automatically updating the grub and kernel. I have a Windows 7 and Fedora boot option, however additional entries get placed after the updating, essentially messing up the entire order of the grub. After the update the old entries still remain in the grub building a huge clutter.

I am also blacklisting nouveau, so I can install the CUDA toolkit.

Any ideas on how I can go about solving this problem? Much thanks in advance!

Can't get SMTP/25 through my new Q1000 modem

Last week I ended up with a Actiontec Q1000 (replaced a PK5000 - long story). So I can set:

FWD from a server:22 to

FWD from anywhere:80 to

FWD from anywhere:25 to wont' work.

From an external server I can telnet myserver 22 - works. I can telnet myserver 80 GET /index.html - works. But telnet myserver 25 just sits there - nothing... I can, from myinternalserver2 25 to myserver 25 and connect OK. I just can't get from external 25 to internal 25. I can't receive email from 'out there'. myserver iptables off - nope, Q1000 firewall off - nope.

Prob something stupid (not that I've everrrrrrr do that before).

problems finding files after F16 64bit installation

I did a clean install of F16 64bit into partition #1, and can no longer access the other partitions.

F14 (that was preupgraded to F15 but ended up split between them) is in partition #2.

If possible, I'd especially like to access the previous email addresses and photos.

Guidance and suggestions are much appreciated.

sda1 / 4gb swap

sda2 / 50gb fedora 16 64bit

sda3 / 50gb fedora 14/15 32bit

sda4 // 27gb os3 (empty)

sda5 // 27gb os4 (empty)

sda6 // 27gb os5 (empty)

sda7 // 27gb home

sda8 // 26gb files

Clicking file manager > home brings up an authorization screen that asks for my password which I enter.

An error screen opens that says: error opening directory '/media/home/lost+found': permission denied

The same for os #3, 4, and 5, which are empty partitions.

Clicking file manager > fedora14-i686- brings up the password screen again, then files for /media/_Fedora-14-i686-.

Nothing happens when I click file manager > documents, music, pictures, videos, or downloads.

endless crashes

I just wonder if a) Fed 17 will be better, and b) is anyone having the same problems??

My computer crashes everytime I unplug the dsl cable. I have reported this to redhat bugzilla. Apart from updating, they haven't made any suggestions in a long time now.

This morning, I shut down Fed 16 normally at home, unplug speakers, charger, dsl cable, come to school. Switch on, computer won't start. It freezes half way through booting.

I have to start Windows, then reboot, to get Linux started. This happens with Fed 16 or Ubuntu. This does not happen with Windows, but I never use Windows. It is on the laptops I buy, and I leave it on a small partition. Windows seems to do a base reset of the system, then Linux can start it. Linux cannot do this.

As I don't have this problem with Windows, I am assuming no hardware failure. So Linux is at fault. This is a Toshiba Sattellite 600 laptop.

I have never had such problems with other computers, and I have used Fedora for a long time.

The computer also crashes after using the overhead projector in the classroom, and then unplugging that .

Does anyone have any idea what is going on, or why?? I update almost daily, so I have the latest and greatest packages.

How to Auto Mount Network Attached Storage (NAS) at Boot?

I am quite new to Fedora.

[What I am trying to do]

On Fedora 16 (Gnome 3), I am trying to mount network drives at boot automatically. What I have done is adding lines like below in /etc/fstab.

Code: /media/nas cifs username=yep,password=yep,iocharset=utf8,noperm 0 0

I also tried nfs option instead of cifs option.

  • It does not auto mount // at boot.

  • Manual mounting ("sudo mount -a" from the terminal) does not work either. Responds no error message.

  • However, I sometimes observe the system mounts network drives all of sudden far after the boot. Strange...

  • Is syntax in /etc/fstab correct?

  • What are other possible reasons that prevent auto mount? SELinux, firewall, etc...

Anyone used relinux with Fedora16?

Hi everyone!

Just a quick question to see if anyone had used relinux with Fedora 16, and if so, how well it works.

I've set up a computer I'd like to turn into a flash drive (live boot) and carry with me so as to have all my software and such.

I occasionally do this with Ubuntu using Remastersys, but I'd like to be able to do it with Fedora, and at first blush, it seems like relinux will do it, but I was hoping for testaments or warnings before I jump in head-first. If there's a better way, PLEASE don't be afraid to mention it. = )

Note: To be clear- I DO want a system that keeps user data and settings when it creates an ISO file. Think of it as a backup live ISO of the system.

Fedora 16 upgrade grub kernel lists Fedora 15 entries

I recently upgraded from Fedora 15 to 16 via the desktop dvd. Now the grub menu includes old entries from Fedora 15 kernels, even though they no longer exist. I tried commenting out all Fedora 15 kernels from "menu.lst", and checked "grub.conf" as well. The FC15 kernels still appear in the grub boot menu though. Does anyone know where is I may look to get rid of these entries? Additionally, grub does not seem to respond to my default number to boot. This is what my "menu.lst" looks like (notice I commented out the FC15 instances):

[SOLVED] VLC player zlib issue

Hi folks,

First post here at the Fedora forums since switching from Ubuntu.

I'm hoping someone will be able to offer a solution to an issue I am currently having. Specifically, I am attempting to install VLC media player within a recently installed version of Fedora 16 (Verne, Kernel: 3.3.4-3.fc16.i686, Gnome 3.2.1).

While installing I encounter the following error message:

Any help is much appreciated, and as always, I'm willing to offer any additional information you might need to help diagnose this problem.

All the best,

I just came to the forum from a new computer, and googling something wound up on the forum.

Now I realize that you only see the ads if you're not logged in--I remember at some point, Leigh deciding that if you had adblock on, you couldn't search, I don't know if that's still true, I haven't done anything with this machine.

However, the ads seem to be showing up in the posts, rather than at top of page.

Then, the rest are fine, which is what makes me think it might be a configuration error.

Image garbled,Freeze in Firefox and other apps in Gnome-Shell. Important!!

Image Freezing and rendering issue in Gnome-shell with Nvidia GPU is faced from Day1. however, with nouveau open source driver, this issue is not present.

At Nvidia Forums, this bug is finally is checked and We need more feedback. I hope more people collaborate.

People facing this issue with image rendering in browser and other applications, Kindly register with http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/ and Help the Nvidia developer Hopefully fix this bug ASAP. Nvidia Developer is Listening.

link: post in this thread:

We may need more people who faces this bug to give more inputs. Note that irrespective of distro this issue is prevalent. be it Ubuntu,Fedora or Debian.

This issue is crippling Gnome-Shell experience from Day 1. Hopefully it will be fixed this time.

I am using Gnome3 with Debian Testing. Upgraded to Gnome3 recently.

Gnome3 is working Fine. I have Nvidia drivers also installed and working fine.

The Problem is, with some Applications particularly applications like Shotwell,Eye of Gnome(eog) etc, if I zoom in or out a image, it gets stuck and stay like that until I do anything like moving mouse to the "Activites" corner or launching another application etc etc.

Below is a screenshot with eog loading a image, when I tried zoom out the image. Look at the word "Haq" which is rendered garbled :

The Problem with Iceweasel(Firefox) browser is almost nearing unusable state. the pages gets garbled sometimes if I scroll through them.

I was adding a Youtube video to a forum thread elsewhere, and then Iceweasel acted as expected. garbled in the sense, I meant misaligned page! below screenshot was taken when I submitted the video to the forum thread and waited for the page reloading. this kind of performance degradation remains for even 10seconds in Iceweasel with Gnome3. see the circled area.

After a Suggestion, I tried upgrading mutter window manager to 3.2.x and gnome-shell and allieds also is currently at 3.2.x from Debian unstable repository.

While, in Gnome "Fallback" Mode and with Compiz also, Applications render images, pages correctly and smoothly.

Someone Hints issue may be with "mutter" window manager or "clutter" opengl library Gnome3 is based on?

What May be the Reason. Help needed. Even if I can understand what packages are causing this problem, I can send a Bug report to Debian upstream packaging team regarding this.

Thanks In Advance

GDM gone crazy - Changed the default key map, help?

How do you change the GDM keyboard map these days? It used to be easy (as the different keyboard maps used to be available from the GDM screen, but nowadays is all but a mystery to me. So anyone how to change from one keyboard map to another for GDM?

The system keyboard map is OK (at the console), and when I create new users the GDM map is wrongly inherited... I need to change the map from en_US to es_LA (or rather la-latin1, as identified by the console), how do I do that? (It is also a mystery how it got screwed in the first place, as well)

Slow Game

I have a mini-micro problem, or, better say, a little iritating situation.

I am using Fedora for work, but also for fun.

In this situation, problem is my favorite game - Kshisen.

It is no big deal, but piece removal is panfuly slow.

It takes 5-10 seconds from clicking on selected pieces to removal of this pieces.

I am trying this game in Linux Mint(not like Ubuntu based distros) and there work fine and fast.

Also try this game in OpenSuse KDE( I like it, but prefere Fedora) and work fast too.

What is the problem and is there any way to fix this?

I am using Fedora 16 64 bit KDE

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core 3.2 Ghz

Graphic Intel on board(no other data available?)

Thanks for answers

Wanting to setup a triple boot (Fedora \ openSUSE \ Windows XP Pro

Now that I've determined that it would be best to go ahead and do a fresh install of Fedora 16, I've decided I'm going to try a triple boot, like I have been wanting to do for a while now. I've done a dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu before. But now I'm looking for advice on setting up a Fedora / openSUSE / Windows XP Professional triple boot.

Fedora will be my main OS and XP will be there just for PC Games mostly (and a few other bits of Windows software, I can't let go of yet). And a good friend of mine who is a programmer reccommended that I start playing with openSUSE if I really want to learn Linux, so that is the reason I'm wanting to install it also.

Also I'm planning on using the 64 bit version of each OS.

Any info on the best way to set this up is greatly appreciated.

Thank Y'all as always,

Screen saver crashes and unlock the box F16 Xfce 64bit

I have been trying fedora with different Desktop flavours, and Friday last week I started used Xfce. I left the box locked with the screen saver and when I returned on monday to the office, the box was unlocked and all opened. Anyone could take control.

Everyday I had a whole heap of crashes, from my JVMs to evolution, but the desktop lock is worrying. Here's the error:

Process /usr/bin/xscreensaver was killed by signal 6 (SIGABRT)

I have attached the coredump. Any ideas?

Color Calibration leaves redish hue to display

After using a Pantone Huey to color calibrate my HP 2159m 21" LCD monitor on Fedora 17, the resulting display looks overly redish or pinkish.

Without color calibration, everything looks great, but I'm using the Huey to try to match up what I see on the monitor with what will appear on paper if my photos are printed.

However I really find that this reddish display isn't helping things any.

I previously tried using displaycalGUI on Fedora 14 on the exact same hardware and ended up with the same symptoms.

The reddish tint is seen if I face straight at the monitor. If I stand up and look down, the reddish pixels are significantly less. Not sure what this symptom indicates.

Image attached shows how red it looks in a mostly white walled apartment.

Can anyone explain what I might be experiencing and how to fix it?

Nvidia graphics issues

I was wondering if someone could help me figure out some problems that I'm having with my graphics. I have dual card, Nvidia 460 and 590, that I use three monitors with. I was unable to get these to work with Gnome. I installed the Nvidia supplied drivers. The setup works great in KDE, just not Gnome.

In fact, after having attempted a few times to get it working, I am stuck with the ?safe mode? scheme that has repeated every toolbar portion. I have 5 data/time, 5 work spaces, 5 application and places, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I turned off the wrong display in XFCE

Hi everyone,

The background: I have a computer that has two video ports, HDMI and DVI. I'm running F16 with XFCE. The initial problem was the login screen was showing up on the HDMI display even though I didn't have a monitor hooked up to it. I was staring at the default background on the only monitor I had hooked up (DVI). So I plugged an additional monitor to the HDMI port (running dual montiors) and was then able to log in. My goal was to deactivate the HDMI port and use a single desktop on the DVI port. I went into display settings, there were two options to check for the DVI display and one option for HDMI. I selected DVI and unselected HDMI. Now both screens are blank. When I reboot and get to the login screen, both monitors work. As soon as I log in, they both go dark.

The long awaited question: Is there a way to repair my display options and ultimately use just the DVI port? I know zilch about commands, but I can at least get into the recovery console.

Thank you,

I hope no one is researching this. I just re installed the OS and was able to get the monitors to work correctly. Sorry if I inconvenienced anyone.

[SOLVED] nvidia card not used

I have a Thinkpad T500 which has an NVidia card NVS 4200M. I was using Fedora 16 till saturday and had nouveau installed on it. No issues.

I moved to F17 and still have nouveau as the driver to hadle the NVidia card. It looks like my laptop is not using the Nvidia card at all. I have attempted to use the nvidia driver without much success. All the more, I would prefer to use the nouveau driver anyway instead of Nvidia driver. (I do not play any games anyway ...).

Nvidia 7800 GT - Desktop effects choppy on F16

Hey all,

I've been using Fedora 16 for a few days on this machine now, and I've been searching everywhere for an answer to my problem: all opengl-related rendering in gnome are choppy/laggy, and I have kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia installed.

I feel like an idiot, because somewhere along the line, I went through my history in the terminal, and ran the wrong command when trying to rebuild my initramfs... so now I don't have the original initramfs with nouveau in it. @.@ I fail as always...

I originally installed the Nvidia drivers using EasyLife, and then when I had this problem of choppy animations, I tried following this guide, and decided to rebuild my initramfs.

I had a backup already following that guide, so I init 3'd and uninstalled akmod-nvidia and installed kmod-nvidia, then rebooted...found out I forgot to rebuild initramfs. I also found somewhere that kmod needs akmod installed, so I installed akmod again. Now I had both. So I "dracut"ed, and rebooted again.

It's still laggy, but I realize now that I may have gone in a complete circle.

I am getting tired of this choppyness, and tired of troubleshooting this. Any help would be appreciated...

Firewall crashes on F16

Hello All,

Have searched but to no avail..

Am new to Linux and have installed Fedora 16.

Am opening the basic firewall config - 'system-config-firewall'

and the initial screen appears and the firewall screen greys out and freezes. A few minutes later the message appears saying:

The window "Firewall Configuration" is not responding. It belongs to the application system-config-firewall (Process ID = 3509, hostname = localhost).

Do you wish to terminate the application process including all of its child windows?

Any unsaved data will be lost.

Any ideas please..

Sorted..its OK..can tell I'm a beginner...

I was attempting to open the firewall through a VNC connection which was prompting me for the ROOT password on the remote PC..!!

My bad....cheers anyway...

Assistance please with /etc/hosts

Now I dont often have to mess with my local network but I have an application which needs to use dns lookup to find another PC on my local lan (it assumes anything in its config to be a name and not an IP address!)) so what I thought I could do was to add the relevant name and IP address to my /etc/hosts file and after a restart any request for the defined host name would be returned the IP address from the hosts file. However this is not working. I have added a line in hosts :- weather.com

which I thought should work.

Can some one please help? What have I done wrong?

Seeking advice from a network admin

I have a number of books that cover some parts of how to set up some pieces of networks. What I do not have is the bigger view of networking, as it would apply in a home set up or a very small business with just two or three computers in either case. I am thinking I would like to have one central box be like a file server where the other boxes could store files. In the past I have set up NFS for Linux boxes and Samba for any Windows boxes. Should I be using something else - NIS, FTP, ...??

Another problem I face is that I would like to avoid using hard-code (static?) IPs for the machines. My modem/router/switch issues IPs dynamically. I am not sure what to do to address the boxes by name. Do I need to set up DNS?

I realize that the services and types of servers to be set up are dependent upon the topology of the network. I would very much appreciate sort of a general run-down on a few common scenarios.

Thank you!

Remmina 1.0 - How to Install on Fedora 16

Hi Everyone,

I am running Fedora 16. I want to use Remmina to get to Remote Desktop Connection Windows System. I have installed 0.9.3 and I successfully get connected, however, I am unable to copy/paste data between my Linux and the Windows remote system.

There is a Ubuntu bug opened and fixed for this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...na/+bug/937522 . Where would I find the Fedora fix for Fedora 16?

I've tried to install Remmina 1.0.0 to see if that would fix this, but the only version I could fine with Remmina 1.0.0 is for Fedora 17 and it wouldn't install due to freerdp dependency issues.

I tried to compile it myself, but the directions in the README are only for Ubuntu and couldn't get past the CMAKE.

Thanks for any help...

KDE randomly freezes, NVIDIA driver at fault?

I'm on FC16, using KDE 4.8.3 and for the past several weeks, I have been having problems with KDE randomly freezing or logging me out without warning. Needless to say that this is very annoying and I have lost some work because of it. I have been having these problems on my desktop machine, which has an NVIDIA GPU. My laptop is installed the same way but does not have problems. It has an Intel GPU. Further, I believe my problems started when moving to version 295.49-1 of the NVIDIA proprietary driver.

First, the relevant information of my system:

I've been monitoring /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors for clues but so far I have failed to come up with anything conclusive. I did find messages such as these in /var/log/messages which seem to coincide with X crapping out:

May 12 17:10:27 deepthought kernel: [172119.249950] NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.

May 12 17:10:27 deepthought kernel: [172119.249956] NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.

Right after these messages, KDE freezes completely, except for the mouse pointer which continues to move. The system itself is still running though. I can ssh in from another machine and top tells me that X is putting one CPU on 100%. A reboot is the only way to regain a working desktop.

Google tells me that the above error can be resolved by enabling "Persistence Mode" in the NVIDIA driver like so:

# /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1

This seems to have stopped KDE from freezing completely but it still boots me to the login screen every now and then.

I am also seeing this in /var/log/messages at times, which coincides with me getting booted out of my session:

May 13 14:33:35 deepthought kernel: [76223.746031] NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

May 13 14:33:37 deepthought kernel: [76225.746120] NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

Google has been unable to enlighten me as to what these messages mean, just as these messages:

Switching my system to the Nouveau driver, yields a stable desktop at the expense of not being able to play 3d accelerated games, of course. Gnome 3 also seems to be unaffected but I haven't used that extensively so I can't be certain.

I have found this thread http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1574003? but the problem with KDE happen without a video player running. It even happens on switching a tab in Firefox.

Any ideas on how I can get my stable desktop back?

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - Loki Games

Hello all,

I managed to install and get running this game in Fedora 14 using this install script: http://www.liflg.org/?catid=7&gameid=90

Then using this script to run the original Alpha Centauri:

LD_PRELOAD=./Loki_Compat/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so:./Loki_Compat/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0 ./smac.dynamic

And this one for Alien Crossfire:

LD_PRELOAD=./Loki_Compat/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so:./Loki_Compat/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0 ./smacx.dynamic

Of course INSTALL_DIR is replaced for your installation directory.

I have one problem though! When discovering new tech the mp3 voice overs, found in ./data/voices, do not play. Which is sad, as it is one of the most defining parts of the game.

Any ideas?

I can not input letter 'a' .

I can not input letter 'a' in firefox , gedit , libreoffice writer ,etc.

I can input letter 'a' in gnome-shell search frame on right-top corner .

I use F16 amd64 arch.

What is the matter?

/bin/mailx -s "$subject" "$to"

I also tried by running sendmail but still same problem.

Any help?

"Energy Saving Settings" on F17 KDE broken since upgrade

came across this issue just today, suspend and profiles work, but whenever i press the power button it just shuts down, even when i have set the "prompt log out dialog" option for that, already tried some things like unset/set options again to no avail.

also should say that is not a "clean" shutdown, it just kills all programs running and shuts down.

was working on f16 before upgrade.

Can't Install RPMFusion Repositories

Good day all:

After several weeks now, I've been trying to install RPMFusion-free and non-free repositories with no success at all.

I've read many of the forum threads and "googled" for a viable solution and still can't find a proper solution to this issue.

Without this repository, I can't install VLC and many other codecs and apps that I really need.

So far, this is the error I'm getting:

[root@Y-PC Downloads]# sudo yum localinstall --nogpgcheck http//download1-rpmfusion-org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable-noarch.rpm http//download1-rpmfusion-org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable-noarch.rpm

Cannot open: http//download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm. Skipping.

Nothing to do

Even if I download the repository directly to my PC and run "yum localinstall", this is what I get:

[root@Y-PC Downloads]# yum localinstall rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit

In order to get updates as I used before, I have to disable this repo.

I'm really clueless about this issue. I've even reported this incident 2 weeks on a different thread and didn't got a reply.

Hope someone can guide/help me with this particular problem.

Thanks in advance.
