Updates Testing?

I'm trying to install wine on a pretty fresh install. I've installed all the developtment libraries and tried the classic workaround:

Code:

install wine --enablerepo=updates-testing

to no avail. I'm wondering if the updates-testing repo is disabled because of F17 proximity?

Anybody have any info on this or a workaround?

(yum is throwing protected multilib errors during dependency resolution)

long way to linux heaven

This is 3~4th failure/crash of gnome-shell F1X update.

there is too much time wasted to setup the right gui-environment.

a few days ago, everything was fine, something goes to wrong when i did "yum update".

this pattern is so bad to all linux users, they will just leave the linux..

anyway, now, i am just fine with slitaz.

frugalware(not bad, but the installation somewhat faulty..), arch-linux, F17-alpha, freebsd all failed on my 2nd-old-com.

other computer of mine just works fine, it hand-maded lfs/small-oses or ms windows family..

If I remember correctly, somewhere it was written "We won't maintain versions that are old" were old meant that it was 2 releases behind like in this case right now with Fedora 15 and 16.

Dansguardian not starting after switching to Fedora 16)

Hello,

I'm upgrading our home network to Fedora 16 as I have several units running either F14 or F15.

Now with Fedora 16 I've encountered an issue with dansguardian, it won't start and I get the following message in /var/log/messages:

I have dansguardian up'n'running in F14 and F15 environment even the package seems to be quite old.

I've tried quite a few things but without success. This is getting quite annoying.

Any hints?

Video Stutter Display Problems - Fedora 16/64 ATI 1366x768

I have a HP DM1-4108au Laptop - running an AMD e450 APU @ 1.65Ghz with integrated 6300 ATI graphics. It won’t play video. I’ve got 8 gig of ram installed.

I’ve tried VLC, Mplayer, Xine and Kaffeine.

I have all the codecs installed via AutoPlus and MJMwired’s website.

All the videos are MP4 and MOV files recorded from 2 different devices. Video stutters and stalles; somtimes I only get sound, other times it’s only video frames; but no video has played succussfully.

The problem is consistent accross all kernels I have installed.

Quote:

kernel.x86_64 3.3.1-2.fc16 @updates

kernel.x86_64 3.3.1-3.fc16 @updates

kernel.x86_64 3.3.1-5.fc16 @updates

I am running generic graphics driver (no ATI / Radeon).

Also, My hard drive is a 128 gig Crucial M4 with bios version .009 (so no stuttering). Disk utility give me 540Mb p/s read speed and 0.3ms access times, so it should be like lightning but, photo access time is appalling. It takes literally 2 or 3 seconds to display the next 4Mb photo when I am browsing a collection. I have another computer running an Nvidia card and perusing a photo collection is almost instant, even with 10Mb images.

I read somewhere that it could it be I need to add nomodset to my boot parameter? I’m not sure if this is the case running the default open ati driver. I think I'm running the 2.1 Mesa 7.11.2 driver. That's what hardware lister tells me. I've got no Xorg, just a vanilla kernel (well, with akmod for wl broadcom driver).

What could be the problem? How can I trouble shoot this? Where do I start? It's driving me nuts. I just want to show videos of the kids to their grandad and it's totally unwatchable.

Thanks.

gnome-shell calendar is empty / evolution works as aspected

Hello,

Anyone else has the problem?

Why can't I sign an RPM package with my GPG key?

I build my package: 'rpmbuild -ba SPECS/rmmr.spec' and this results in a source and noarch package.

I can check the

'rpm --checksig RPMS/noarch/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.noarch.rpm SRPMS/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.src.rpm'

RPMS/noarch/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.noarch.rpm: sha1 md5 OK

SRPMS/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.src.rpm: sha1 md5 OK

I want to add my GPG signature to the packages and try this:

rpm -v --addsign SRPMS/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.src.rpm

rpm: SRPMS/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.src.rpm: No such file or directory

But, 'ls -l SRPMS/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.src.rpm' reports

-rw-r-----. 1 kevinc kevinc 7547 Apr 15 11:24 SRPMS/rmmr-1.8-1_3kc.src.rpm

I've been signing packages just fine since the mid 1990s with RPM 4.0. Now on Fedora 16 I can't sign packages? I added '-v' to rpm to report what's going on. But, that didn't help. I'm guessing that there's some temporary directory somewhere that doesn't exist. But, I can't figure out what's going on.

Any ideas people?

Thanks....

Problem booting after updating kernel

Hi!

I did a sofware update on my fedora 16 x64 among the packets that were to be updated was the kernel, I was sitting on the 3.3.0-4.

After the update to 3.3.1-3 I ran through som problems booting the kernel however if I chose to boot the old kernel in GRUB it all worked well.

I didn't have time to look at the issue at that moment so I decided to wait and when I was going to look at it I noticed that I could upgrade again to an even newer kernel (3.3.1-5) and thinking that it might solve the issue I ran that update.

The problem I have now is that none of the three kernel options I have in the grub menu will boot not even the 3.3.0-4 option.

What happens when i pick one is that it seems to start at first and it begins starting up daemons, but stops at "starting sendmail transport agent" every time.

After that the typing marker just stops and blinks I dont even get a shell to work in.

I dont really know what to look for in this since it seems to start up daemons but doesn't start up in any init level cause it doesn't start an X session nor CLI.

If someone could help me with getting the OS to start in any init level that would be great.

Thanks beforehand //kartofflarna

Starting programs in shell

I'm new in Linux and I have a problem with a little thing :

For example when I type this in terminal :

Code:

$ cp file.ext /lib/

I pass some arguments to a program called "cp" and it parsing the arguments and in this example it copy a file to a path

I found that some apps that I use in terminal are located in /bin folder and I can access every file that is in /bin folder directly and global

But some apps are not in /bin folder but I can use them in terminal ( for example yum ):confused

In windows there is a variable called PATH that Can be used for make a folder global

has Linux something like this ?

My question is how Linux do it ? I mean how does it recognize the apps that we use in terminal ?

For example I have a file in path :

Code:

/apps/

named exam.py

I want that when I use

Code:

$ exam my args

in terminal this file pass to python interpreter and then execute

like :

Code:

$ python /apps/exam.py

?

Need to get WINE working with .hta

For shiz and giggles I am trying o get Solidworks installed on Fedora while I am waiting for the company to get me a copy of Win 7.

The issue I am having right now it it's a nework install with a .hta installer. It was trying to open with my fedora browser and of course it didn't know what to do from there. Now that I have messed with Wine and added a bunch of stuff it's trying to open with Microsoft (R) application host but it crashes.

I don't know how to launch this in a terminal so I can see if it will give a reason for crashing. The program is mstha.exe but if I type "wine mshta.exe" in terminal I get this for a response. mshta.exe is a stub!

I have tried to drop the network locaiton into internet explorer and firefox under wine. Neither knew what to do with it.

How do I run this .hta?

opengl extremely slow after newest nvidia driver

On XFCE, after installing nvidia v295 released on 4/11 i think (kmod) my screensavers and glx gears went under 1 fps in full screen on a 2x64 Athlon and a series 6 GeForce card. Flash animation works fine though. Tried to remove nouveau from initramfs with

mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img

dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

# removed "rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0" from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

But after dracut nothing happened, i did not get my prompter back. Do i need to replace above uname with something else?

One question, if i have after updates, 2 different kernels in the menu and each of them is working with a different version of nvidia, and only one nvidia drive in the initramfs imge, do i have to keep nouveau in that image so i can fall back onto it if i choose to load a different kernel?

[SOLVED] How to change boot and login screen

Hello everyone,

I'm using Fedora 16 with XFCE and LXDM (lxde login manager.)

This is essentially 2 questions in 1 thread, so how do I change the boot screen (The "wallpaper" of the boot screen. The default is a black screen.) and the login screen (The "wallpaper" of the login screen. The default is an ocean and a submarine. It's from Finding Nemo.)

I've been trying to do this for some time now, so help will be appreciated. I prefer not to change my login manager to something such as GDM. However, if you can't state a solution that does not involve changing login managers, please feel free to state your solution.

Thanks,

Grub2 Drive Numbering Inconsistency

I'm really confused. When I first installed Fedora 16, the grub.cfg file generated had entries referring to hd0. Just what I had expected. My system has one internal drive (sda), and two external drives (sdb and sdc). Recently I executed grub2-mkconfig and looked at the resulting grub.cfg file. In this file, all references are to hd1, not hd0. Since the original file booted successfully, I expected that the new file would not, presumably trying to load systems from sdb. Much to my surprise, the new file worked just as well. The documentation I've found seems to tell me that hd0 is the first drive in the BIOS order, while hd1 is the second. Why do both files boot successfully?

F16 Updates Stopped Working

My system has been OK since I installed it about 10 days ago. I update the machine daily like this:

'sudo yum update'

That always worked, until today. Now I get the usual stuff, except at the end where it complains about GPG keys not being right in the repository. See below:
