[SOLVED] RPMFusion in Fedora 13 (Goddard)

So, I've finally made the move from Windows to Linux. With no previous experience, I think I'm learning quite fast. Managed to get MP3's playing in Rhythmbox. However, I just cannot get WMV videos to play. Apparently I need RPMFusion. Ironically, every site I've been on giving help on playing WMV's, produces the same problem. RPMFusion requires version 15 or greater. I just don't have the data to upgrade to 15 right now...perhaps end of the month. Does someone know what I can do to get my videos running on F13 for now? Please.

Compiling Chromium from source

Hi,

I've successfully compiled Chromium from source (the first time I compiled something from source) earlier this week by following the instructions posted here:

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wi...ldInstructions

At the end of the process, I was under the impression that the shortcut in my Cinnamon menu was updated automatically to the new version. However after multiple attempts since, I have had no luck in running the new builds. Basically, the tutorial ends with the make command. I've looked into the output folder but I can't seem to find the program's launcher (executable).

Can someone help me please to have access to new builds as I can't seem to find on the internet either.

Thanks!

Can't set Shotwell Viewer as default

This is a rather baffling problem.

Running Fedora 16 LXDE spin on my netbook. I removed the default (gpicview?) image viewer because I preferred Shotwell. Now my problem is that I cannot find a way to set Shotwell Viewer as the default image viewing application. For PNG's it automatically opens the viewer, but JPG's open the Shotwell photo manager. Shotwell Viewer is not on the LXDE menu when I go to set program defaults, and I can't find the CLI command for it.

Anyone have an idea?

[SOLVED] Broadcom-wl Fedora 17

In Fedora 16, I added the RPM Fusion repository and ran 'yum install broadcom-wl' to install my wireless driver. I have installed Fedora 17 beta and added the RPM Fusion repository, but broadcom-wl is not in the repository and 'yum install kmod-wl' returns a dependency error because wl-kmod-common could not be found. Has anyone gotten broadcom wireless working in Fedora 17?

Announcing the release of Fedora 17 Beta

Quote:

Look, up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... the Beta

release of Beefy Miracle! Flying 'round the world at the speed of the

intertubes, delivering progress, mustard, and freedom to the masses.

We are delighted to announce the availability of the Beta release of

Fedora 17. Want to get a taste of the future? Download it now:

http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease

== What is the Beta Release? ==

The Beta release is the last important milestone of Fedora 17. Only

critical bug fixes will be pushed as updates leading to the general

release of Fedora 17 in May. We invite you to join us in making Fedora

17 a solid release by downloading, testing, and providing your valuable

feedback.

Of course, this is a beta release, meaning that some problems may still

be lurking. A list of the problems we already know about is found at

the Common F17 bugs page, seen here:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F17_bugs

== Features ==

This release of Fedora includes a variety of features both over and

under the hood that show off the power and flexibility of the advancing

state of free software. Here are just a few of the new features:

On the desktop: GNOME 3.4 introduces many user experience improvements,

including new search capabilities in the activities overview, improved

themes, and enhancements to the Documents and Contacts applications. A

new application, GNOME-boxes, provides easy access to virtual

machines. Additionally, GIMP 2.8, the newest version of the GNU Image

Manipulation Program, brings new improvements such as single-window

mode, layer groups, and on-canvas editing.

For developers: You never sausage a great array of development tools!

Fedora 17 includes a pre-release of Juno, the release of the Eclipse

SDK expected in June 2012. Java 7 (and OpenJDK 7) is the default Java

runtime and Java build toolset, and GCC 4.7.x is now the primary

compiler in Fedora. Other language refreshes include shipping Ruby

1.9.3, the latest stable version of the Ruby language, PHP 5.4, the

latest PHP stack, and Erlang has also been updated to the R15 release.

Under the hood, and in the cloud: The Cluster stack in Fedora includes

numerous and significant updates for both high availability and

load-balancing applications. Fedora 17 utilizes Linux kernel 3.3, with

improved btrfs and ext4 filesystems, GMA (poulsbo) graphics and

Broadcom wireless chipset support, and numerous other bug fixes and

enhancements. Firewalld is now the default firewall solution in Fedora,

providing dynamic firewall configuration capabilities. Finally,

OpenStack, a collection of services that can be used to set up and run

cloud compute and storage infrastructure, has been updated to the

latest release, 2012.1 (Essex).

And that's only the beginning. A more complete list and details of all

the new features in Fedora 17 is available here:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/17/FeatureList

We have nightly composes of alternate spins available here:

Unable to get any Second Life viewer to work

Running on a 64 bit machine, using Fedora 16.

I have tried the SL viewer, Imprudence, Pheonix, and a few others. I keep running into the same issue every time. Whenever I try to run it, after extracting to my Downloads folder, nothing happens or something pops up and is gone so fast I have no idea what the issue is.

I have been looking around for ways to solve the problem and every time I think I figure it out I am right back where I started. I am have a little experience with Linux and am willing to learn more.

Please help.

PPPoE (autentification required)

Hello guys. My name is Ovid. I'm using Fedora 16 on my TOSHIBA C660 Laptop. I want to configure my network internet with ppp0. (PPPoE)

I set up with pppoe-setup, but doing pppoe-start, it's not starting.

If I do ifconfig, I don't see eth0 or ppp0, i see p17p1 or something like that.

How should I do?

F16 DVD media on USB installs grub instead of grub2

Hi all,

Any idea why the DVD media is using grub as its bootloader and then installing it to disk instead of grub2? I really want the system to use grub2 instead of grub - I tried to replace it using grub2-install but I had some errors from grub2 about the method not being reliable, and when I tried with --force and rebooted, the bootloader just hung.

Advice appreciated,

Regards,

Yax

---------- Post added at 08:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:28 PM ----------

Adding bios_grub to /boot/efi mount point allowed grub2 to install correctly, but now the system has some issues booting and goes into an emergency mode ... I'll post more details when I reboot.

Code:

parted /dev/sda

set 1 bios_grub on

This causes bios_grub flag to be set for partition 1 on /dev/sda (assuming this is your boot device). This enables grub2 to install correctly onto the boot partition.

Chrome cache

I found a way to change Chrome cache directory and size from /home/username/.cache to whatever adding this /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome %U --disk-cache-dir="/tmp" --disk-cacke-size=640000

on the launcher in usr/local/share/application/Google Chrome.desktop, right click properties, Launcer tab, before moving the launcher to the panel. However, there are two problems with this. Every time Chrome gets an update, it changes back the Exec command, and when i open links in Thunderbird, Chrome opens without that option and puts the cache in the above default directory. A better solution?

Do Iptables rules correspond with Dynamic Firewall rules and vice versa?

Hello everyone,

Do Iptables rules correspond with Dynamic Firewall rules and vice versa? What I mean is that if I change my firewall from Iptables to Dynamic, do I retain Iptables' old rules? Also, if I change my firewall from Dynamic to Iptables, do I retain dynamic's old rules?

Using a hypothetical example,

Iptables once had rules (A, B, C).

I change firewall's rules to (A, B, D, G)

I change firewall from Iptables to Dynamic Firewall.

Will Dynamic Firewall use rules (A, B, D, G)?

Also, if I want to switch back to Iptables,

Will Iptables keep (A, B, D, G)?

Or, if I want to change Dynamic Firewall's rules,

Dynamic Firewall's rules were (A, B, D, G)

I change Dynamic rules to (A, B, E)

I switch to Iptables

Will Iptables use rules (A, B, E)?
