Fedora 16: the begining of the end?

I've been a redhat/fedora user for more than 10 years.

The last few years, I've started to worry a lot about the way fedora is evolving.

Last week, my computer died. I brought a new one and installed F16. Outch.

Five days later I can write a post here. Let's hope I can finish it before the next crash.

I must say it's the most awful system I've ever tried since windoz ME.

I cannot even ask for help because the problems are legion, it took me a whole day just to see the login screen for the first time. It's so unstable it just crashed when I try to set the clock...

Right now I'm seriously considering installing windoz. I would have laughed if someone would have told me that only a week ago.

I'm using my computer for work. I wasted a whole week trying to set up F16. With 10 years experience in system administration and access to the internet on another computer (a windoz laptop). I couldn't have only started the kernel without it because the video driver is crashing at the very start. I just can imagine what a "regular" user would say: "linux sucks".

So now I have two options: moving to another linux distro and waste a lot of time learning what I know on fedora, or moving to windoz....

What do you think I should do?

Fedora 16 LXDE + Windows 7 Wireless network

Hi all!

I just got a laptop with Windows 7 from my work and I want to settle a wireless network with my other laptop (running Fedora 16 LXDE spin).

I've never done this, that's why I'm asking for a simplified and step-to-step guide, if possible.

My setup is as follows:

Wireless modem\router (provided by my ISP)

Laptop with Windows 7

Laptop with Fedora 16 LXDE Spin

I can also connect them via ethernet cable, but I really want this in wireless fashion as I want to be able to access all my files from one computer to another from all the house.

Let me know if you need any further info from me!

[SOLVED] recent update somehow keeps me from connecting to wireless

I think it has to do with daemon KDE something, when my laptop is finished booting i usually type my KDE wallet password and my laptop connects to my wireless network.. but since a recent update there is a new pop up window that appears which also asks me for a password so i put in "mrbean" but nothing happens after this i just get the same KDE secrets pop up window to put in my password i see all available networks but it wont connect any help with this please i am new to linux im trying to learn by looking up problems that i encounter and by fixing it but for this one i had to reinstall f16  can anyone help me with this please? ty greets

I found this barebones Supermicro box for only $1679! The only problem is, once you click the configure button and fill it up, the price is staggering. Somehow, I don't think the fully equipped version will fit my birthday budget! :(

[SOLVED] Yikes! Oopsy!

I don't really want to talk about how it happened ... but ...

the 411:

A backup drive with a MINT10 install being used for back-up file storage

An unguarded moment with gparted, and the wrong drive selected.

All partitions deleted

I haven't written anything to it since. (I figured out the screw-up when the wrong drive noise came out of the box.)

Question: (to which, I'm afraid I already have the answer.)

Is there any reasonable way to restore the partitions, and therefore the data?

/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libquazip.so.1.0.0 is empty, not checked.

I thought I would document this error since its not documented very well. The package or file may be different but the idea is the same.

For some reason I can not install the app wine on fedora 16

I am fairly new to fedora or any linux distro so can someone please advise me on what I need to do to fix or get around this problem, thank you.

Can't get past KDE login

My Fedora 16 laptop (ThinkPad T500) has been running just fine for weeks. I decided to do some MySQL development and noticed that some of the settings weren't correct (couldn't find /var/lib/mysql.sock for one), so, since it was the environment setup during the installation of Fedora, I decided to uninstall/reinstall MySQL. After doing so, the problem still wasn't corrected, so I thought maybe a reboot would help.

After rebooting, I am now unable to log in to the KDE desktop. When I enter my username and password, the KDE login screen goes away for a split second and comes right back. All I can make out when the screen is blank is something in the top-left that says "loading initial ramdisk". When the screen comes back that split-second later, I'm back at the login prompt. Neither my login nor root works. I've tried all entries on the GRUB menu (including "failsafe") to no avail.

The closest thing I've been able to get to logging in is, on the login screen, change the session type to "failsafe" and logging in gets me a single terminal window and none of my desktop theme - just the same login screen background. I've uninstalled MySQL again from this terminal window, but that didn't help.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I am looking for a magnifying glass

I would like to install an app that would mangify a selected part of the screen. I need a magnifier that could cover the whole screen and have anti-aliasing software built in.

I have downloaded gnome-magnifier through PackageKit but it does not show in any menus.

When I tried to install it through yum I got the message that the file is already installed and latest version.

How come I don't see it in the menus?

I saw the kmag-magnifier but that is for KDE desktop, right? I am on GNOME.

Thanks in advance,

Bluetooth Not Working

I am running a Dell Inspiron e1505 and cannot get the bluetooth working. I have tried the things at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=192299 any other suggestions?

Computer hanging, advice appreciated...

Hi everyone,

The long and short of it is, my lappie is dead :( I was burning a CD in brasero a few weeks ago and when it was finalising the disk the screen went all pixelated and I had to force it off. I booted up again and itt would just hang about a second after power on. It wouldn't do anything, just sat there idly while I tore out my hair :C :p

A few days ago I discovered that if I left it on for a certain amount of time it would simply continue the boot process as usual. So I did that and it worked fine, though I believe the time it was hanging was increasing per boot. THEN, I looked into the BIOS and changed the boot order of the HDD from 2nd to 1st place.

When I slelected "Save and reboot" the power went off instantly then it powered up again and now it appears to just be hanging forever :( Last time I checked it was on for about 3 hrs and still no change. It also appears to be gobbling up battery power at an unusual rate, though I can't verify that for sure. The only reason I can think of for this behaviour is that the BIOS got corrupted somehow.... Does any know what could be wrong with it??

TIA :)

(P.S Since I won't be able to get to the library everyday I probably won't be able to reply very quickly :()

Any way to stop the top bar in gnome shell from covering menus?

Sometimes when applications have menus that are too long to open in a downward direction they open upward instead, which is fine, but they seem unaware of the top boundary and the the bar from gnome shell covers them. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Fedora 16 keeps loading with Fallback Mode

I have Fedora 16 on a HP TouchSmart and its been loading great so far. But recently it won't stop loading in Fallback Mode. I have checked the System Settings and the Forced Fallback Mode is turned off. It could have something to do with the wrong Caribou installed but at the moment I'm not sure. At one moment with rebooting it went back to the default look of Fedora 16 but when the password was inputed it said can't login because the system can't recover.

Also with the Fallback Mode I'm not able to access my folders. When a folder is clicked in Places is says "Could not open location ... No application is registered as handling this file." The only thing that does work is Search For File.

Thunderbird - Chrome relationship

Not very good, they don't like each other!

I couldn't make Thunderbird to open Chrome in clicked links in messages no matter how many times i set Google Chrome as a default browser in Preferred applications. And that until i removed its companion, Firefox, from the computer, then it gratified me with a one time pop up that if you don't fill it right with the path to google-chrome script opt/google/chrome/google-chrome the first and only time, it will run in error and with missing default browser for ever. If you have set-up Google Chrome as default browser when you removed Firefox, then it would give you the choice with an icon and no needing to put the path in. But even after that, Google Chrome would pop with a message that it's not set-up as a default browser although it was, and if you do so, then Thunderbird again woud say it does not have a default browser set up and that would be a vicious circle. I solved the problem by closing that pop when Chrome was asking me again and again to be default browser and then everything started to work fine. Anybody knwos in what file is the above setting for which i lost several hours?

Number of Sectors Available

I have a 32 GB ssd. I installed F16 on it using GPT and a btrfs Filesystem for / (slash). I created an image of it using Clonezilla and it shows as 62533296 sectors. I subsequently installed F17 RC4 using EXT4, and I suppose MBR, and it now has a Sector count of 62511710. Prior to installing F17 I have been able to restore my images without incident.

Needless to say it refuses to restore the Image to, what it perceives as, a smaller drive. Does anyone know how I can get restored to the 62533296 sectors, so I can restore my Image. Maybe 'dd' or something to reset it. Any help would be appreciated...

New Cluster

Hey all

I'm trying to do a simple operation on a new cluster we have, but this is my first attempt and I'm having trouble. I have five nodes, each with 12 threads. Right now, I'm the only one using this cluster.

I have a serial program that I basically want to run multiple instances across all the threads available. I need to run this serial program on 1000 datasets, each of which is independent. I wrote a serial bash script which simply runs the program 1000 times and iterates through the datasets. I would like to be able to run 60 concurrent instances (or whatever number of threads are available), with each moving on to the next available dataset as it finishes. Since it's only 5 nodes, I have no problem manually parsing the data into five chunks and running them on each, but if it's simple to automate from the master node that would be preferable.

My serial test script runs just fine using qsub, but is only using one single thread.

I apologize for such a pedestrian question, but I don't even have a concept of the architecture required. Thanks so much.

Computer won't suspend/wakeup proper

Sometime in the past 4 days or so, I've lost the ability to suspend the computer / wake it up. Closing the lid will turn the screen off, and even run the pm-suspend hooks, all of which record success in the /var/logs/pm-suspend log, however, I can still hear the fan running. When I wake up the computer, it is instantaneous again suggesting nothing has happened but the screen being turned off, and what's more, nothing works anymore!

Literally. The shell comes up, and I can click things like firefox, shutdown, but no applications are launched. Also network manager shows both wired and wireless devices are unmanaged, and so will not make any internet connection.

The only fix I have found when in this state is a hard reboot, holding down the power button, even switching to another vt is not possible to do a root shutdown -r now. The only workaround is to never suspend the computer.

xfce , kickstart and wlan0

I built a custom kickstart install of xfce and specified that I wanted the wireless network to be used. I included the following in my file

network --onboot yes --device wlan0 --bootproto dhcp --essid=MYSSID--wepkey=1234567890

The system booted fine, but I don't have any network. shortly after booting I get a popup that asks me to confirm my password. I also went to the network icon in the upper right corner and I see my network listed.

"Authentication required by wireless network"

"passwords or encryptin keys are required to access the network "MYSSID"

I clicked show key and I see the proper wep key for my router. I clicked connect and it comes back and asks me again for the network.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this and get my network up with install.?

I am trying to put a system-wide PATH= variable, but nothing seems to work.

Firstly, I added a lines in /etc/profile. Somewhere here:

# Path manipulation

if [ "$EUID" = "0" ]; then

    pathmunge /sbin

    pathmunge /usr/sbin

    pathmunge /usr/local/sbin

    pathmunge /usr/local/sbin after

    pathmunge /usr/sbin after

    pathmunge /sbin after

Then, I removed these lines, and added sh-script in /etc/profile.d/ with something like (this is what I've found in one post; example is with JDK):

echo 'export JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk1.5.0_12' > /etc/profile.d/jdk.sh

echo 'export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH' >> /etc/profile.d/jdk.sh

source /etc/profile.d/jdk.sh

That did not work either. So, I wonder how to put permanent and system-wide PATH=?

Thanks in advance!

Can't get graphical boot

I cannot get Plymouth to use the "charge" boot animation. It currently only shows the three lines, one white and two that are different shades of blue, across the bottom of the screen.

I have installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers (nouveau refuses to work with my chip) and disabled nouveau with the following command:

dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

Then I ran

sudo grub2-mkfont --output=/boot/grub2/DejaVuSansMono.pf2 --size=24 /usr/share/fonts/dejavu/DejaVuSansMono.ttf

and added the following to my /etc/default/grub

and I generated a new grub.cfg with

sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

I used the following two commands to change the Plymouth theme:

sudo plymouth-set-default-theme charge

sudo /usr/libexec/plymouth/plymouth-update-initrd

This process worked perfectly in Fedora 16 and resulted in grub's font being changed to DejaVuSansMono and working boot animations, but I cannot get either of those two things to work in Fedora 17 beta. When I installed Fedora 17, I did a wipe and clean install.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Fedora 17 Beta Installed with Nvidia Drivers

Tried the Pre-Upgrade from 16 first, that didn't work at all, would not boot up after restarting. Lucky me, last night I downloaed Fedora 17 DVD, so I erased the HDD, and installed. Nivida Drivers went right in, and everything else is working fine. Good job, Fedora, this one looks Gold!

Broadcom Wireless in F17

I've got really weak connection to my wireless router and the speed of my connection is really low. I believe it's an issue with the drivers that are installed by default on my system. Suggestions accepted.

Installing on Gateway Solo 9550

I am trying to install Fedora 16 from a bootable CD I created on a Gateway solo 9550. The machine specs are as follows:

Intel® Pentium III™

Processor-M CPU

512 KB Flash ROM

I start the boot process from the CD I can here it grinding away and after a while I get the message:

Oh no a problem has occured

The sytem can't recover

Please logout and try again

Does not go beyond this. Any idea what might be going on here?
