Diable screenblanking at boot on fedora16/sfre

I have an install of fedora 16 that is running xfce. I built the system via a kickstart file and the system works fine and stays up.

The one problem I'm having is that the screen keeps blanking out after 10 minutes. I can type any of the following to turn off screen blanking

xset -dpms

xset s off

but I need to do this during the boot and embed this into my kickstart file.

What file do I need to create to tell xfce not to blank the screen.

my lattest attempt is

~/.xprofile

contents

-----------

xset s off

xset -dpm

---------

I've also tried entries in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, but nothign has worked yet.

This should be so easy, but I can't figure it out.

Samsung RC512 Notebook

Hello,

I am having problems installing/running Fedora on this notebook. Fedora 13 DVD will install but the notebook cannot find the bootloader so it is necessary to select "Backup Copy (F10)" on boot to start Fedora 13. Installing the bootloader to 1st sector of partition 1 is no help as there is no backup copy for that location.

Attempting to install Fedora 16 or 17 DVD goes no further than "Loading Fedora..." screen and computer locks up after message...

"trying to allocate 1155 pages for VMLINUZ

Got pages at 0x02eaf000

[Linux-EFI, setup=0x105f, size=0x46e050]....." blah blah blah

The drive is a C 300 - CTFDDAC 256MAG which performs normally with the mfg recommended OS installed on it.

Any help appreciated.

Removal of fedora website content needed

at this url http://fedoraproject.org/en/using/#tutorials you will find the official fedora tutorials. You may also notice the custom launchers tutorial,

if you click the link you will find the tutorial is outdated and does not work for newer versions of fedora with gnome 3. This content should be removed or updated, do you agree. (leave a reply)

Can't get full resolution on my laptop?

Hey all- I'm running an Intel HD 3000 graphics card on Fedora 16, 64 bit. My system seems to be using the VESA driver (Which is bad, right?) If I got into Display manager, it says the laptop screen is "Unknown." The system doesn't recognize any display when I plug it into my laptop's VGA port- but if it's plugged in when I turn my laptop on, it mirrors my laptop screen.

$ lspci | grep VGA (04-19 01:27) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

$ xrandr (04-19 01:27) xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* 800x600 61.0

How can I get everything working?

Gtk+ themes

I'm trying to install Adwaita Dark theme for Gnome 3 (fedora 15),

I installed all the gnome shell extensions, enabled user theme extension (through gnome-tweak-tool), copied the Adwaita Dark downloaded and extracted theme folder to /usr/share/themes/ ... I can see the theme name in gnome-tweak-tool but It doesn't work the way it should (after redrawing gnome, or restarting fedora), in fact none of the themes other than the default one (Adwaita) display the interface as they should; just a plain light coloured interface that looks really bad.

Any Ideas?

good old iptables service

Is there a way not to use firewalld in F17, but to have instead good old iptables service?

I am running Fedora on my server/router and have a fairly complex /etc/sysconfig/iptables configuration (which I edit by hand). From what I have read F17 implements firewalld which has some benefits for desktop users (ease of use) but is nowhere close in sophistication to what you can do with iptables (and patch-o-matic) on your own.

Is there a solution for me?

Need an updated version of firefox for Fedora 14.

I am still running Fedora 14 non my main machine while I work on mastering gnome 3 on another machine. But I need Firefox 10.0 or beyond. The version that Fedora 14 gives me isn't adequate for my needs.

I went to the Firefox website, and the only choice I seem to have is to download a tar file for version 11.0 for Linux. I did that, and extracted it to a directory on my desktop. But it doesn't look like anything i expect. There is no makefile nor any way to produce one that I see. Also, I can't find any instructions to tell me what to do.

Can someone give me some advice about how to obtain a more recent version of firefox than the one I have which I can construct with my Fedora 14 system? Or can someone tell me where to find a link to instructions?

F16 GUI Desktop freezes but console available

Fedora 16 Gnome 3 desktop freezes, no response with "still" screen - like a screen shot of the display. The mouse and keyboard are active. This event has occurred about once per week to today: twice today. The freeze normally occurs during the middle of doing work during the day.

I can invoke Cnt-Alt-F2 to invoke a fully functional console. I can login and I can ping www.google.com so my network is also active.

I can view processes where I can kill some active processes e.g mail & VMWare.

A colleague mentioned that this has also occurred to him and he has performed a kill on gnome-shell.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Shut down time

Has anyone but me noticed the flippin' amazing shutdown times for F17 Beta?!

BasKet Note Pads

Hello

I dont know if anyone has had any experience with this software but its invaluble for me to keep organised.

The problem is when putting passwords on notes. When setting up the password pinentry-gtk-2 dialoge appears asking me for a passphrase which I enter and click ok, then it asks me to re-enter the passphrase which I do and click OK again, it then goes through this again so In the end I have entered the passphrase 4 time. When I click to unlock the note it unlocks without prompting for a password. Its as if it is remebering the passphrase. Its a KDE program which I have installed on gnome shell which I think is where the problem lies.

Can anyone suggest where I can start to get the password function started?

Thanks for your time

Slow performance of php/apache from remote machines

Hello. I have an FC16 installation with PHP and Apache. The problem I am having is that all pages work well when using it on localhost, but when you try to view a php page from a remote machine, it is extremely slow (30+seconds). It is multi-homed with a public and a private interface. It is still slow even on the intranet. I have uninstalled and reinstalled apache and php with no joy. Anyone have any ideas. Is there somewhere else I should be asking this?

Use the Anaconda Installer to install a LiveCD image

The live image installation is more fast than Anaconda DVD Installer.

Is posible build a installer based on Fedora DVD installer that install a customized liveDVD image?. I guess that the installation will be more faster.

The problem for big liveDVD (4GB) installations is the RAM memory requirements during the installation. The Fedora DVD installer only need 1 GB or 512 MB.

Maybe this is imposible, what should I do for a faster installation from DVD.

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

this file should be bundled so that some default/proper statements/construct inside

rather than just cramp up by users

this could be disaster if some guys just write the command inside without any 'expected' format or structure

vbox guest additions after kernel update

After a yum update that includes a kernel update, Virtual Box Guest Additions no longer appear to work. At least, the 3D acceleration, copy/paste between host and guest, and Shared folders, no longer work. This wasn't the case with F16.

If I re-rerun the script to reinstall (which actually means removing DKMS and non-DKSM modules, and then rebuilding them from source), and reboot, things work again. Is anyone else seeing this? And is it expected? Makes me wonder if it's a bug and then if it's a kernel bug related to DKMS, or if it's a vbox bug related to DKMS, if it I'm just lucky.

nVidia customer gear

LOL what are you talking about, are you sure?

Maybe it's a different card...

Did you put glxgears in fullscreen or should i have told you that? I was thinking after i sent that mail, i should have told you... No way cause you know better than me...

Help for Installing Fedora,Ubuntu and Win7.

Hello experts, i m new to Linux world.

I want help for installation of fedora. Recently I installed FC16 on my PC which had Win7 already installed(BIOS showed me Both Fedora and Win7). After few days i decided to install Ubuntu replacing fedora, so i removed fedora by formatting whole fedora partitn. Then when i restarted the system,....BANG......No option for Windows 7 :( I guess this happened because installed Bootloader on the windows bootloader something like that.

I am purchasing new laptop and i want to triple boot Win7, Fedora and Ubuntu.

Can u help me how do i install these 3 OS so that anytime i decide to remove or format a particular OS it must not affect other 2 OS and their BIOS entry(OS LIST IN BOOT TIME) is preserved.

Please Help.

Thanx in advance.

not able to resize the vlc or smplayer at the corner

Since I moved to f17 I am not able to resize the media players by dragging at the edge of the corners.

Is there a fix coming or am I missing something obvious?

rtmon and iproute

I've found that since around FC15 rtmon hasn't been distributed with iproute. Anyone else experience this?

I can't find anything in the changelogs about removing rtmon, and the rtmon man page still comes with iproute. I checked the iproute repo and they still distribute rtmon with iproute.

I'm pretty confused by this so any help is appreciated.

Using phone as modem

Hi all

I'm trying to set up my mobile phone as a modem in Fedora 13. Anyone have an idea how one can do this? N.okia does not have a software package for Linux.

Network card Auto-negotiation mystery

Hello,

My old PC has D-Link DFE-520TX PCI Fast Ethernet card, which is/was excellent until this first problem. 2 nights ago there was some good lightning/thunders activity, resulting in burning of ISP network switches. This morning they replaced the switches and brought up the network, but here's the problem:

1) Under the default card setting with Auto-negotiation, PC looks for DCHP Server address resolution and ends up with YELLOW triangle in the system tray.

2) Whereas, when I CHANGE the card setting to 10Base in FullDuplex, then PC gets connected to the ISP network.

My ISP support said that either the card could be damaged due to lightning strike or it could be due to damaged cable running from port box to my PC (RJ-45). I'm wondering, could a lightning strike damage a Network card in such a partial manner (just one feature, i.e., Auto-negotiation)?

I tried two experiments:

1) Plugged the same cable into a Laptop, connecting with default setting, Auto-Negotiation, was successful and done the bandwidth testing too (13 Mbps DL and 11 Mbps UL).

Note that in PC the Speed test fails!

2) Next, rebooted into that PC in Fedora Core 14. Detects the card, here's dmesg:

[ 19.572814] via-rhine.c:v1.10-LK1.4.3 2007-03-06 Written by Donald Becker

[ 19.572932] via-rhine 0000:01:05.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17

[ 19.848539] eth0: VIA Rhine III at 0xefdfff00, 00:15:e9:48:b1:a4, IRQ 17.

[ 19.849260] eth0: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0x7869 advertising 05e1 Link 45e1.

...........

...........

...........

[ 36.193877] eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1

But, Internet doesn't work!!

So evidently, Network card's Auto-Negotiation gone kaput? I fail to understand how come a single feature makes card useless, though I'm typing here by using the same card in 10Base FullDuplex mode.

ISP guys changed Network cable in the morning so it's ruled out.

Anyone provide some insight? I think changing PCI slots test is useless?

Problem is it fails to work under default setting aka Auto-Negotiation, but works in 10Base FullDuplex. That explains the performance hit. I don't see any problem with CPE Box, so the problem should be in the Network card. There is NO router/modem.

This PC is a dual boot PC with XP and FC 14. So both OSes can't go wrong when the card was working near perfect with default setting aka Auto-Negotiation.

This Optical Network Terminal box in my home has 3 connections with battery back up. One line comes to this PC. Other two lines are working near perfect, and this line also works on a laptop with default N/W setting but NOT on this PC.

I can change the card within few mins and UP the network in Auto-Negotiation, but my only intention is to learn why this card failed. Still I couldn't find the right answer :)

Please suggest

Thank you

Changed the card into different PCI slots, removing other PCI card etc. Nothing helps :(

Hello !

When I try to login in Fedora 17, I take an ERROR that recommend me to logout:

Unable to start, exiting.

Oh no ! Something has gone wrong.

And now i can login only in Fallback Mode but in GNOME 3 Mode, I can't because I take above error.

How to solve this ?

kvm is not available when using virt-manager

Hello,

Code:

Fedora 16 latest updates

HP Mini 210

Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N550  @ 1.50GHz

I have installed the virt-manager. When I try and create a new virtual machine I get the following warning:

Code:

KVM is not available. This may mean the KVM package is not installed, or the KVM kernel modules are not loaded. Your virtual machines may perform poorly.

I have installed the following package:

Code:

qemu-kvm-0.15.1-4.fc16.x86_64

And loaded the kvm module:

Code:

lsmod | grep kvm

kvm                  406993  0

Not sure what package I am expected to install, or what kvm kernal module is not loaded?

Normally I use virtualbox without any problem. But I wanted to try and see if this virt-manager performs better.

Many thanks for any advice on this,

Nouveau

I'm trying to file a bug report for a crashy gnome 3.2 and have been asked if I'm using the Nouveau driver. I replied:

I guess so, whatever is default for F16 - certainly not nvidia driver

(my graphics card is an nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8300 GS] (rev a1))

Gnome reports: Gallium 0.4 on NV86

Apparently this isn't precise enough, can anyone advise what more I need to do / say?

[SOLVED] No ethernet

Hi,

I'm running Fedora 16 on a Dell Studio XPS laptop and I've been using Wi-Fi since the very beginning. I decided to plug it in via Ethernet while at home but for some reason, it doesn't work.

I was expecting the RJ45 cable to be detected automatically if I were to turn off my wireless.. but nothing. I went to network settings but I don't have the option to add an Ethernet connection. I've been browsing the web most of the night trying to find a solution to what I though should have been a simple thing and most recently tried this explanation:

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...-ethernet.html

Somewhat dated but decided to give it a try anyways. I installed with yumex system-config-network and added an eth0 device. After restarting my system, still no luck.

Here is my ifconfig:

Code:

I've heard that SELinux is very good, but probably for systems on networks, mind is not so I don't think its needed.

why doesn't the program do what you tell it to do. How do I solve this problem to get rid of this?

F17 Beta installed but lost after 3rd reboot

Hi,

This thread is different from my previous F17 thread. Multiboot lappy with openSUSE 12.1 as default OS. Originally when Suse 12.1 was installed, legacy Grub bootloader was placed in the MBR and common boot partition sda5. Later on, added Kubuntu, F16 and Suse 12.2 which are all Grub2. This arrangement allows chainloading into Windows, Kubuntu, F16 or Suse 12.2. Boot menu is from Grub Stage 1.5.

Recently, I installed F17 Beta in the root partition sda11 of F16 to overwrite the latter, and had no choice but to place Grub2 bootloader in the MBR;I tried but failed to boot F17 if Grub2 is in either boot partition sda5 or root partition sda11. After the first reboot, I can boot into F17 Beta allright. However, after I logout, boot into openSUSE 12.1, logout then boot into F17, Grub 1.5 menu shows error 15: File not found.

Please refer to the attached file RESULT.TXT = output of Boot Info Script.

I would appreciate your help fixing this problem.
