Commands and passwords echo'ed to screen...

Hi All, long time reader, first time poster, so go easy!

I've been using Fedora for some years, though never as my main OS. A few months ago, my pc spilled it's innards all over the floor, so with a new (second hand!) pc, I decided to use Fedora as my main OS. As such, I'm slowly learning things that you don't normally get to see when using it as a headless server/test machine.

Right now, I have an issue with dual monitors, but that's not the reason for this post. Having been playing with nvidia-settings, nvidia-xconfig and the nvidia drivers (now removed courtesy of yum), I now have a strange situation.

Basically, I have everything echo'ed back to screen when in the console. This includes passwords when logging in and using su. Now, I understand that it might have something, however convoluted, to do with display drivers (thinking along the lines of ssh/telnet echo...), but find it a little hard to believe.

And to top it all off, I now have lost tab-completion and "up" for previous commands!! The shell is bash (ps -p $$), and I haven't updated anything else when installing/uninstalling the nvidia stuff, which has me confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

how does one automate wondershaper on fedora

Greetings,

I am using wondershaper on fedora 16 x686 gnome. It works great but I am losing the set-points at system reboot. This is easily overcome on Ubuntu but I am not finding a solution for fedora. Basically what I need to do is execute a script as root after the network comes up or execute the following command when the network comes up:

up /usr/sbin/wondershaper wlan0 512 200

down /usr/sbin/wondershaper clear wlan0

otherwise: #wondershaper wlan0 512 200 has to be set manually after each start-up/reboot.

On Ubuntu the up/down setting/commands are place in the /etc/network/interfaces file. If there is an equivalent file in fedora please let me know. The computer is being used as a gateway with several nodes on it. When I forget to set the bandwidth limits I use all of the bandwidth available causing a big problem. Since I forget I would prefer to automate the process. For this application it is my experience Fedora is more reliable than Ubuntu. Fedora is my new standard linux dist since Ubuntu changed their gui.

Thanks,

Mike

How to Install Firefox 12 on F14

Google's Gmail advises I am running an old version of Firefox (installed ver is 3.6.24), and I should upgrade to a new version of Firefox to ensure new Gmail features will work with my browser. I've downloaded firefox-12.0.tar.bx2 to my desktop, and uncompressed it with tar xvf. I can't find any instructions on how to proceed, and I can't find the usual configure file to start installation.

Can anyone assist with how to install Firefox 12 on F14?

TIA,

Jon

Installing F17 and keeping my current home directory

Hello,

HP Mini 210

Fedora 16

I have downloaded the recent F17 Beta live CD and would like to install it.

Normally, when I install I always select the following custom partitions:

/boot

/swap

/root

/home

I am just wondering is it possible to install Fedora17 and keep my existing partitions so my home directory will not be formatted?

I would like to format the following partitions boot, swap, and root. As I don't want to leave any unwanted files that could impact F17.

Basically, I want to do a clean install but keep my exiting home partition.

Many thanks for any suggestions,

AHCI and "SATA" DVD drives

The specifications for "SATA" DVD-RW drives reveal what kind of data and power connectors the drives take. But is there a specification that reveals whether these drives work when the SATA controller set to the most modern mode in BIOS (AHCI instead of IDE or PATA ) ?

So far, I find that none of my SATA DVD drives (which are several years old) will work with the controller set to the AHCI mode. Is this mode irrelevant to DVD-RW drives?

Fortunately, the motherboard I'm configuring ( GA-970A-UD3) has the SATA ports divided into two groups and they can set to be in different modes. This lets me use AHCI on the hard drives. I read on someone's blog that its best to have SSDs controlled in the AHCI mode. Is that true?

Wavy scroll

Yesterday i installed tripwire after a clean install and updates. First thing i did after that was i installed Chrome than ran tripwire --check. I had over 2000 violations and i don't really know if this is right or not cause it was the first time i used tripwire but i thought maybe it's easier to tweak Firefox to make it run like Chrome than installing Chrome. Especially because i don't know if Selinux is really taking care of Chrome after installing it form an rpm i download from their site. And i tried, and it was loading sites slowly and i set in about:confg network.http.fast-fallback-to-IPv4 true and voila, it was loading sites as fast as Chrome. But... there is a problem with smooth scrolling, i use nouveau and when i scroll with the wheel in smooth scroll mode (general.smoothScroll true) not all the lines are scrolling on the same time, there is a slight delay on some lines on some pages only and the feeling is i have waves on the screen. Barely noticeable but still unnerving and distracting. I tried and made the xorg.conf file in etc/x11 and put in there the following line and rebooted, with no result. Curiously enough, all the flash commercials on those sites are working... perfectly!

Section "Device"

Identifier "Default Device"

Driver "nouveau"

Option "GLXVBlank" "True"

I have Firefox on an old 32 bit 640 MB RAM Windows XP computer and it works better on that one!

Changing mousewheel.acceleration.start to a positive value seems to help a little bit!

Connection refused: homeshop18.com:80

I get the above message when I try to get through to this website. Could anyone tell what's going on? I tried to make sense of the solution provided in this thread, but unfortunately I couldn't decipher it. So I have to ask it again.

I could access that website until only a few hours ago. Then suddenly I started getting that message. There isn't an issue when I use Firefox but when I try to connect using OPERA, it just refuses to make a connection. I use Fedora 16.

Could you help fix the problem?

And finally, I am not a Linux expert.

Thank you.

backup hard drive advice

Hello,

I am fairly new here, been running fedora for a bit. When I initially installed fedora, I was using the live version and I accessed a external Western Digital (usb external) hard drive. I believe the drive is USB 2.0 but can be used as 1.0. After I accessed the drive from the fedora live distro it became corrupted.

I recently have gotten a seagate internal hard drive that I want to install in this (same) computer. I would like to access this from both fedora 16 64 and win xp 64, as backup storage.

Is this a realistic idea, or will I corrupt the drive as well?

I am running off of a (separate) hard drive in the machine right now, and I can put things into the windows ?partition? without difficulty, although windows doesn't seem to see the linux (fedora) partition.

Basically I want backup storage and to be able to access it, whatever I am using.

Thanks in advance,

snaok

Libre office 3.4.5 odp files too big

Hi,

I was just making presentation to school, but after some time I realized that the file size is too big- about 7MB. After opening the odp file in archive manager I found many images I have never used in the presentation (they were all background templates).

I didn't find any way to delete them safely, so I had to start new blank presentation and copy there all slides from the old presentation.

When searching on google I found out that similar problems had people 4 years ago on some forum  (the developers don't know about the bug? (if it is bug) ). Did anybody came across this problem and found solution?

Libre office version: 3.4.5

Hard Drive Error : ata3.00: status: { DRDY ERR }

After the latest update for Fedora 16 x86_64 I had problem with my System. The log always spams with these messages

and the system did freeze and i had to reset it. In fact my system was useless.

Did some google research

Several posts in forums said the problem was the harddrive or I should replace my sata-cables. But I coulnot believe that at all

After some searching i found this post in a UBUNTU forum:C

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1034762

So it seems a Kernel bug on ata acpi

I put "options libata noacpi=1" in/etc/modprobe.d/options.conf and that solved the problem. Still got the messages but the system didn't freeze anymore.

Maybe someone can explain what's happening

I have an older 15" powerbook mac "non intel" that I'd like to make a permanent fedora box out of . I believe Fedora 12 was the last distribution that installed on this particular system.

Where can I get this distribution in dvd.iso format ? I've randomly done the google thing and can't seem to find it.

I've been successful with installing the lastest version on my MacBook Pro, but I want to do something creative with my old powerbook.

Thanks for any help!

Fedora live CDs and AMD multi-core CPUS

Is there some fix that is needed to make the FC 15 and 16 live CDs work better with AMD multi-core chips?

This may be a coincidence, but I have 3 systems that have, respectively, 2 core, 3 core and 4 core AMD CPUs. The FC 15 and16 live CDs (Fedora-15-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso and Fedora-16-x86_64-Live-XFCE.iso) both boot faster on the 2 core. They boot slower on the 3 core and they boot slowest on the the 4 core. (Once booted, the systems are equally sluggish.)

It's amusing to watch the "pre-boot" screen that says (in FC 16) "Starting Fedora 16 in ...". I can watch the seconds tick down. The seconds on the screen are roughly real seconds on 2 core chip, they seemed to be spaced about 2 seconds apart on the 3 core chip and they are spaced about 3 seconds apart on the 4 core chip. The same thing happens with the FC 15 CD. I wonder what configures the timer on that screen.

I tried disabling the "K8 Power...whatever" feature in the BIOSes that can slow the CPS down. That didn't change anything.

[Fedora 15] Slow network after upgrade

Hi; I run two servers at home, and I recently ran into a trickier sort of problem.

We'll call them ns1 and ns2. ns1 is the primary server where serious bizniz happens, and ns2 is a testbed for stuff.

Both servers are reasonably identical: both are AMD + Asus MB, with embedded Realtek chipset for ethernet, and with a second ethernet card (100% identical, bought at the same time etc).

Both servers have similar functions: they run bind, httpd, sendmail, mysql, php, several wikis, forums and such; ns1 also runs dovecot and squirrelmail. Both were assembled and installed by me.

On both servers, eth0 is the internal network's NIC, and it is trusted. eth1 is IP-masquerading, and not trusted; iptables pokes enough prerequisite holes to it, to let it work as web and mail server etc. Both servers have identical iptables setup. On both systems, eth1 routes traffic outside. On both systems, eth0 has a static IP (192.168.0.1 and .2, respectively), and eth1 receives its static IP address from my ISP (with MAC-based identification).

Both servers are connected to the same DSL box, and both servers are connected to the same switch in internal network, using same type of cable. Yay for standardization.

Originally, both servers ran Fedora 13.

I upgraded ns2 around January 2012 to Fedora 15, via DVD, using "upgrade" option, and everything went swimmingly, no problems. I have continued to update the server via yum, and everything is still just fine.

I upgraded ns1 on 1st of May, 2012, to Fedora 15, via DVD, using "upgrade" option, and performance is drastically different. Immediately after upgrading, I ran yum to retrieve update packets, and I thought that was that.

Well, no.

ns2 continues behaving splendidly.

ns1, on the other hand, slows down and then messes something between eth0 and eth1. This is detectable with a simple test: I try to download stuff when my desktop is using ns1 for routing; speed starts at 35 KB/s, then keeps dropping until it is at zero.

If I swap to ns2 for routing, and try to download again, I will get the 2 Mbit/s as I'm supposed to.

However, if I log in to ns1, and start a download off the command line (like, say, with wget), I will get 2Mbit/s again.

This stunted downloading includes downloads from the server itself, while in internal network: prior to update, it worked fast, and content was quick to load.

ethtool tells me that all NICs are running at full speed.

I have already tried to disable ipv6, up to the point of removing ip6tables from loadable services, but ns2 runs just fine with ip6tables lurking about. Both systems do not use ipv6 for any of their NICs.

I have added biosdevname=0 to kernel line in grub.conf, and it still makes no difference (and ns2 runs just fine without it).

I have tried to reinstall kernel and various other things, and none of them make a difference.

My kernel line looks like this:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.43.2-6.fc15.x86_64 root=UUID=9b7277da-bf2f-4ef1-be90-2f7226935c9a ro rd_MD_UUID=84894a3e:0e0dff17:4dc693b9:2565f0cc rd_MD_UUID=a4851993:0ba36d09:736988a9:b06084d4 rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_LVM rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYTABLE=fi-latin1 iommu=noaperture biosdevname=0

I do not spot any obvious problems in /var/log/messages, /var/log/boot.log or dmesg.

I am starting to reach my wits' end, and I can't figure it out.

Please help me. Or at least toss some ideas, so I can try to google and figure it out on my own; I'm out of ideas.

A story you may enjoy

Recently I was given a cute lil' MacBook 13" -left for dead- that had taken a good drink of a 1/4 can of Dr. Pepper on the left side of the keyboard while it had been running.

I left it alone for a week, upside down balancing on the front edges with the screen open, -like a half open clam..lol...or oyster..(clam is funnier), resting on top of a spread out towl.

Diagnosis, boot up screen and chime for one second then no screen while booting Snow Leopard, I left it alone for 10 minutes. Shut it down again.

Reinstalled Snow Leopard, had a screen until the end of install then rebooted...no screen at all, left it alone for 10 minutes...Shut it down again.

Removed the hard drive and connected it to a *gasp* Windows 7 machine and created a MBR partition, then reinstalled the drive into the Mac and booted with Fedora 64 Live CD, had a screen and installed...rebooted...

NO SCREEN!

Booted with Windows 7 Upgrade DVD, still no screen, BUT!... in just the right light I could see something..., grabbed a flashlight and at the correct angle I could see the screen and I went ahead and installed Windows 7.

Rebooted, no visable screen but with an angled flashlight I could see enough to configure Win7 and then shrink the primary partition leaving about 80% free and blank of a 320GB hard drive.

Used the Fedora 16 64-bit live CD to boot and got a visble screen through the whole Live install to the empty hard drive space and the bootloader on sda, rebooted...and YAY! I now have a quick and stable working machine running an updated current Fedora 16 install.

I've seen some weird stuff in my time with tech, but a MacBook that can only run Linux and nothing else??? I understand the hardware has been stressed, but this is still really funny.

In other words, don't throw that older Mac away, it could still run FEDORA! :D

gnome 3 fallback looses configuration

Gnome 3 is not conducive to doing real work.

It's pretty but not suited to multitaking work in a complex enviornment.

That said, using fallback I've lost my configuration settings twice now.

I need the ability to configure the desktop with multiple workspaces (10)

I need the ability to add objects to the panel (circa pre-Gnome 3) for one click access to the dozen plus tools I use.

Gnome 3 looks like a step toward tabet/phone compatibility but some of us do REAL work on REAL systems and would rather forego the pretty moving windows things.

How to we get some attention on fallback mode? Loosing configuration is not a pleasant experience.

I'm looking at alternatives to Gnome but none are as configurable as gnome use-to-be.

Sometimes a yum update or install is apparently interrupted by these errors. They are printed on the terminal running yum and I end up with "uncompleted transactions", i.e. the problem appears to happen after the downloads of the rpms are finished and they are being installed.

What's a good way to troubleshoot this problem?

The machine is buggy. It occasionally has a "hard" freeze, meaning the cursor doesn't show and numlock doesn't work.

Edit: A screwy thing about my /var/log/messages is that the messages don't appear in chronological order.. Is this a known bug?

Edit: Answer, yes it is a known bug with rtkit-daemon: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=767314

help with shell script

Hello,

I hope this is possible.

I have an html file...I need to grep or sed or cut or perl (or whatever)...to go through this file and pick up all the fields in the input tag (<input type="hidden" name="name0" value="info_i_want">) and display it nicely.

So all the fields name0...name1...name2...etc would become:

name0 = info_i_want

name 1 = info_i_want

any takers for this task?
