Kernel upgrade broke system - kernel panic and unable to boot

Fedora 16.x86_64

Kernel 3.3.2-1.fc16.x86_64

NVidia binary blob.

Well, I thought it would never happen to me, but I installed a kernel update and its borked my system - and as luck would have it, this is my pride-and-joy "production" machine... BAH.

On rebooting, I just got the message:

Quote:

Kernel Panic - not synching: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)

I had two old kernels available, but discovered I couldn't now boot from either of those either - I got the blue lines to indicate the OS was loading, but then at the end they froze. Checking the verbose output showed it was sticking at:

Quote:

Started LSB: Automatically install DKMS modules for new kernels (OK)

I burnt a copy of the DVD .ISO and booted off that into rescue mode... so far so good. I discovered there was an incomplete yum transaction pending. Running a quick

Code:

yum-complete-transaction

fixed that bit, but I was still unable to boot.

I was able to get an ethernet connection working, and ran yum-update and yum-upgrade much installed another new kernel, but still no joy. I tried running

Code:

yum reinstall kernel

for each of my three kernels in turn, but that told me that the kernel wasn't available.

I've tried a few things, and have ended up uninstalling both newer kernels, leaving me with just the one last known-good kernel. I checked that the initrd /boot/initramfs-kernel-version.img existed for the kernel version I was tying to boot in /boot/, but that all looked in order (I tried running dracut --force anyway).

At some point (I can't remember exactly where, and I'm not at the machine at the moment) I got this output that seems to show what the problem is:

Code:

E: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/3.1.0-7.fc16.x86_64/modules.dep:

No such file or directory

find: @/lib/modes/3/1/0-7.fc16.x86_64/@ : No such file or directory

So - my question is this - how do I reload (or rebuild?) that particular kernel module? Or is my system completely borked? I have to confess I'm rapidly reaching the outer limits of my Fedora knowledge on this one, and most fixes I've read assume the ability to choose a working kernel at the grub boot screen, which I don't have...

Any help or wisdom gratefully received!

Best,

itsjustarumour

F14 no http access to certain sites (only on F14)

I've been running several machines on F14 for quite awhile, and everything was working hunky-dory. All of a sudden, though, http access to certain sites stopped working.

Most sites DO work. Some sites that don't: www.facebook.com, www.mozilla.org.

This is what I get when I run wget:

Quote:

[ken@Bugs ~]$ wget www.facebook.com

--2012-05-07 10:49:45-- http://www.facebook.com/

Resolving www.facebook.com... 69.171.234.21

Connecting to www.facebook.com|69.171.234.21|:80... connected.

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... Read error (Connection reset by peer) in headers.

Retrying.

--2012-05-07 10:51:48-- (try: 2) http://www.facebook.com/

Connecting to www.facebook.com|69.171.234.21|:80... connected.

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... Read error (Connection reset by peer) in headers.

Retrying.

Note the LONG pause after the HTTP request sent and the Read error.

I have a windows XP machine on the same network, and it can access these sites. So it can't be the firewall or router, or any other switches. And since it occurs on only those machines - the ones with F14 - I can only narrow it down to that.

This did work until about a month ago.

Kind of desperate here. Can't upgrade to F15+, since these are older machines with only 512MB (is there a way around that?). Any help greatly appreciated.

TIA

Cant Group Chat in Empathy 3.2.2 with Skype Accounts

Hello,

I think Empathy 3.2.2 and Fedora 16 are a very good merged and all the integration with Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell are amazing. But there is a problem that is bothering me a lot. I use skype4pigdin integration with Empathy and it works very well, better than with Pigdin itself, but i cant see my Bookmarked Chats from Skype (group Chats). Even get a notification when someone chats there (in pigdin i coudnt see it in Contact list neither but got notification's ok)

Tried to join a room with Skype account from the menu Contact List > Room > Join, but nothing seems to work. The skype account is disabled to choose.

I've tried a lot, but couldn't find a way to get this done on internet. can anyone help me with this matter?

Thanks

check sum

In the procedures available and the words used in communication , i am at a loss of understanding.

I did the download and did burn the image. yes i should have checked it before the burn.

going into: verify download at this page: http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options

there are these words: Once you have downloaded an ISO, verify it for security and integrity. To verify your ISO, start by downloading the proper CHECKSUM file into the same directory as the ISO:

clicking on the appropriate link brings up a HTML page of what seems to appear to be keys.

Question: do these keys need to be placed into a plain text file, and then into the same directory as the download.

at this page: https://fedoraproject.org/en/verify

there are the words at the beginning of the verify procedure working with the command line;

Next, import Fedora1s GPG keys(s):

Code:

this is the suggested string: curl https://fedoraproject.org/static/fedora.gpg | gpg --import

$ curl https://fedoraproject.org/static/fedora.gpg | gpg --import

curl: (23) Failed writing body (0 != 16384)

Question: is there a simple basic check sum available for the command line. and some keys to check against.

it has been a while since the last time i did a check sum, and at this time of this post i did not go back into the files and re edit my brain cells on the procedures and commands.

But what we have here just seems a bit to much over the top and does not work.

any suggestions or options in getting around the rock with what is available.

Thank you.

Nvidia driver install, Now random restarts

Hi all. Recently migrated from XP to Fedora 16. Really psyched, and have so much to learn, lol. I downloaded the awesome Easy Life script and installed the nvidia driver that applied to my 8600GT as well as some codecs. Now, my computer restarts seeminly at random. The screen immediately goes to a full screen picture of the nvidia logo, which disappears and I'm asked for my password to login. Once I log in, all evidence of my previous session is gone. I did not see any mention of this particular problem in past posts. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is there some reason why Openoffice is not included any more? Libreoffice is a good project but is still pretty buggy - at least the spreadsheet.

GDM issues: downgrade to accountsservice-0.6.18-1.fc17

Quote:

Just wanted to bring to the attention of F17 testers that problems

emerged with both accountsservice 0.6.19 and 0.6.20, and the desktop

team decided to unpush both updates and, instead of trying to come up

with something that works, go with 0.6.18 for the F17 final release. So

if you're an F17 tester and you got accountsservice 0.6.19 or 0.6.20

from updates-testing, please downgrade to 0.6.18 from 'fedora' repo.

Once the updates have both been un-pushed and mirrors have caught up,

'yum distro-sync' should do this: otherwise, you can use 'yum

downgrade'. Thanks!

Upgrade stalls after selecting Grub upgrade option

Hi All,

I have an older PIII dual boot machine running XP and Fedora 14 with Xfce v. 4.6.2 and was hoping to do and upgrade to F16 w/ Xfce.

I have followed the Installation help located at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpg...are_the_system

Everything seems to have progressed but upon rebooting and selecting the Grub option: Upgrade to Fedora 16 (Verne) the monitor goes to black and the curser justs blinks in the upper left corner. Breaking out and rebooting in Fedora 14 works ok.

I have experienced similar blackouts when nvida drivers were not availabe when a kernal update was installed. But in this machine, I have no xorg.conf file that requires special video drivers.

Is there a way to see where the process is hanging?

TIA

What is the best way to administer Dovecot?

I just did a basic installation of SquirrelMail which consists of:

Apache Server

PHP 5.3

Dovecot

SquirrelMail

I did NOT yet install:

PostFix

I fired up the front end to SquirrelMail and I see the front end. I'm reading from SquirrelMail the all administration of email accounts should be done I'm guessing either through Dovecot or Postfix (Maybe both even). Right now of course there is only DoveCot to worry about. Does anyone know of any good front ends for DoveCot? What would be the simplest way to create a test account to log in through SquirrelMail

Thank You!

problems connecting laserjet 4M printer with ethernet

Today I plugged an ethernet cord into the router and printer.

The printer is found under: applications > administration > printing > HP-Laserjet-4M

Clicking this icon brings up Printer Properties, but the printer is not yet connecting with the printer.

I could use some suggestions on changing the Device URI from parallel to ethernet.

So far I have tried: socket://---ip#---:9100 ... but the screen keeps reverting back to parallel.

The terminal is not working -- I will need to upgrade the os.

Thanks very much.

Update: The Device URI now shows: socket://---ip#---:9100 ... but still won't print a test page.

I don't know if the :9100 is correct, I just saw that somewhere and added it on.
