Fedora 16 upgrade grub kernel lists Fedora 15 entries

I recently upgraded from Fedora 15 to 16 via the desktop dvd. Now the grub menu includes old entries from Fedora 15 kernels, even though they no longer exist. I tried commenting out all Fedora 15 kernels from "menu.lst", and checked "grub.conf" as well. The FC15 kernels still appear in the grub boot menu though. Does anyone know where is I may look to get rid of these entries? Additionally, grub does not seem to respond to my default number to boot. This is what my "menu.lst" looks like (notice I commented out the FC15 instances):

[SOLVED] VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

Hi folks,

First post here at the Fedora forums since switching from Ubuntu.

I'm hoping someone will be able to offer a solution to an issue I am currently having. Specifically, I am attempting to install VLC media player within a recently installed version of Fedora 16 (Verne, Kernel: 3.3.4-3.fc16.i686, Gnome 3.2.1).

While installing I encounter the following error message:

Any help is much appreciated, and as always, I'm willing to offer any additional information you might need to help diagnose this problem.

Ads

I just came to the forum from a new computer, and googling something wound up on the forum.

Now I realize that you only see the ads if you're not logged in--I remember at some point, Leigh deciding that if you had adblock on, you couldn't search, I don't know if that's still true, I haven't done anything with this machine.

However, the ads seem to be showing up in the posts, rather than at top of page.

Then, the rest are fine, which is what makes me think it might be a configuration error.

Image garbled,Freeze in Firefox and other apps in Gnome-Shell. Important!!

At Nvidia Forums, this bug is finally is checked and We need more feedback. I hope more people collaborate.

We may need more people who faces this bug to give more inputs. Note that irrespective of distro this issue is prevalent. be it Ubuntu,Fedora or Debian.

This issue is crippling Gnome-Shell experience from Day 1. Hopefully it will be fixed this time.

I am using Gnome3 with Debian Testing. Upgraded to Gnome3 recently.

Gnome3 is working Fine. I have Nvidia drivers also installed and working fine.

The Problem is, with some Applications particularly applications like Shotwell,Eye of Gnome(eog) etc, if I zoom in or out a image, it gets stuck and stay like that until I do anything like moving mouse to the "Activites" corner or launching another application etc etc.

Below is a screenshot with eog loading a image, when I tried zoom out the image. Look at the word "Haq" which is rendered garbled :

http://i42.tinypic.com/dpetg9.png

The Problem with Iceweasel(Firefox) browser is almost nearing unusable state. the pages gets garbled sometimes if I scroll through them.

eg:

I was adding a Youtube video to a forum thread elsewhere, and then Iceweasel acted as expected. garbled in the sense, I meant misaligned page! below screenshot was taken when I submitted the video to the forum thread and waited for the page reloading. this kind of performance degradation remains for even 10seconds in Iceweasel with Gnome3. see the circled area.

After a Suggestion, I tried upgrading mutter window manager to 3.2.x and gnome-shell and allieds also is currently at 3.2.x from Debian unstable repository.

While, in Gnome "Fallback" Mode and with Compiz also, Applications render images, pages correctly and smoothly.

Someone Hints issue may be with "mutter" window manager or "clutter" opengl library Gnome3 is based on?

What May be the Reason. Help needed. Even if I can understand what packages are causing this problem, I can send a Bug report to Debian upstream packaging team regarding this.

Thanks In Advance

GDM gone crazy - Changed the default key map, help?

How do you change the GDM keyboard map these days? It used to be easy (as the different keyboard maps used to be available from the GDM screen, but nowadays is all but a mystery to me. So anyone how to change from one keyboard map to another for GDM?

The system keyboard map is OK (at the console), and when I create new users the GDM map is wrongly inherited... I need to change the map from en_US to es_LA (or rather la-latin1, as identified by the console), how do I do that? (It is also a mystery how it got screwed in the first place, as well)

Slow Game

Hello!

I have a mini-micro problem, or, better say, a little iritating situation.

I am using Fedora for work, but also for fun.

In this situation, problem is my favorite game - Kshisen.

It is no big deal, but piece removal is panfuly slow.

It takes 5-10 seconds from clicking on selected pieces to removal of this pieces.

I am trying this game in Linux Mint(not like Ubuntu based distros) and there work fine and fast.

Also try this game in OpenSuse KDE( I like it, but prefere Fedora) and work fast too.

What is the problem and is there any way to fix this?

I am using Fedora 16 64 bit KDE

Wanting to setup a triple boot (Fedora \ openSUSE \ Windows XP Pro

Now that I've determined that it would be best to go ahead and do a fresh install of Fedora 16, I've decided I'm going to try a triple boot, like I have been wanting to do for a while now. I've done a dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu before. But now I'm looking for advice on setting up a Fedora / openSUSE / Windows XP Professional triple boot.

Fedora will be my main OS and XP will be there just for PC Games mostly (and a few other bits of Windows software, I can't let go of yet). And a good friend of mine who is a programmer reccommended that I start playing with openSUSE if I really want to learn Linux, so that is the reason I'm wanting to install it also.

Also I'm planning on using the 64 bit version of each OS.

Any info on the best way to set this up is greatly appreciated.

Thank Y'all as always,

Screen saver crashes and unlock the box F16 Xfce 64bit

Hello,

I have been trying fedora with different Desktop flavours, and Friday last week I started used Xfce. I left the box locked with the screen saver and when I returned on monday to the office, the box was unlocked and all opened. Anyone could take control.

Everyday I had a whole heap of crashes, from my JVMs to evolution, but the desktop lock is worrying. Here's the error:

Process /usr/bin/xscreensaver was killed by signal 6 (SIGABRT)

I have attached the coredump. Any ideas?

Thanks

Aurelio

Color Calibration leaves redish hue to display

After using a Pantone Huey to color calibrate my HP 2159m 21" LCD monitor on Fedora 17, the resulting display looks overly redish or pinkish.

Without color calibration, everything looks great, but I'm using the Huey to try to match up what I see on the monitor with what will appear on paper if my photos are printed.

However I really find that this reddish display isn't helping things any.

I previously tried using displaycalGUI on Fedora 14 on the exact same hardware and ended up with the same symptoms.

The reddish tint is seen if I face straight at the monitor. If I stand up and look down, the reddish pixels are significantly less. Not sure what this symptom indicates.

Image attached shows how red it looks in a mostly white walled apartment.

Can anyone explain what I might be experiencing and how to fix it?

Thanks

Nvidia graphics issues

I was wondering if someone could help me figure out some problems that I'm having with my graphics. I have dual card, Nvidia 460 and 590, that I use three monitors with. I was unable to get these to work with Gnome. I installed the Nvidia supplied drivers. The setup works great in KDE, just not Gnome.

In fact, after having attempted a few times to get it working, I am stuck with the ?safe mode? scheme that has repeated every toolbar portion. I have 5 data/time, 5 work spaces, 5 application and places, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I turned off the wrong display in XFCE

Hi everyone,

The background: I have a computer that has two video ports, HDMI and DVI. I'm running F16 with XFCE. The initial problem was the login screen was showing up on the HDMI display even though I didn't have a monitor hooked up to it. I was staring at the default background on the only monitor I had hooked up (DVI). So I plugged an additional monitor to the HDMI port (running dual montiors) and was then able to log in. My goal was to deactivate the HDMI port and use a single desktop on the DVI port. I went into display settings, there were two options to check for the DVI display and one option for HDMI. I selected DVI and unselected HDMI. Now both screens are blank. When I reboot and get to the login screen, both monitors work. As soon as I log in, they both go dark.

The long awaited question: Is there a way to repair my display options and ultimately use just the DVI port? I know zilch about commands, but I can at least get into the recovery console.

Thank you,

Greg

I hope no one is researching this. I just re installed the OS and was able to get the monitors to work correctly. Sorry if I inconvenienced anyone.

[SOLVED] nvidia card not used

I have a Thinkpad T500 which has an NVidia card NVS 4200M. I was using Fedora 16 till saturday and had nouveau installed on it. No issues.

I moved to F17 and still have nouveau as the driver to hadle the NVidia card. It looks like my laptop is not using the Nvidia card at all. I have attempted to use the nvidia driver without much success. All the more, I would prefer to use the nouveau driver anyway instead of Nvidia driver. (I do not play any games anyway ...).

I feel like an idiot, because somewhere along the line, I went through my history in the terminal, and ran the wrong command when trying to rebuild my initramfs... so now I don't have the original initramfs with nouveau in it. @.@ I fail as always...

I originally installed the Nvidia drivers using EasyLife, and then when I had this problem of choppy animations, I tried following this guide, and decided to rebuild my initramfs.

I had a backup already following that guide, so I init 3'd and uninstalled akmod-nvidia and installed kmod-nvidia, then rebooted...found out I forgot to rebuild initramfs. I also found somewhere that kmod needs akmod installed, so I installed akmod again. Now I had both. So I "dracut"ed, and rebooted again.

It's still laggy, but I realize now that I may have gone in a complete circle.

I am getting tired of this choppyness, and tired of troubleshooting this. Any help would be appreciated...

Install 32 bit Firefox on an x86_64 system?

Hi,

is it possible to install an 32 bit Firefox on an x86_64 system. I found several sources that indicate it is, but all

of 'em start with

Code:

yum list firefox

which in my case lists only firefox.x86_64, which is definitely the wrong version.

Am opening the basic firewall config - 'system-config-firewall'

and the initial screen appears and the firewall screen greys out and freezes. A few minutes later the message appears saying:

The window "Firewall Configuration" is not responding. It belongs to the application system-config-firewall (Process ID = 3509, hostname = localhost).

Do you wish to terminate the application process including all of its child windows?

Any unsaved data will be lost.

Any ideas please..

thanks,

S..

Sorted..its OK..can tell I'm a beginner...

I was attempting to open the firewall through a VNC connection which was prompting me for the ROOT password on the remote PC..!!

My bad....cheers anyway...

Assistance please with /etc/hosts

Now I dont often have to mess with my local network but I have an application which needs to use dns lookup to find another PC on my local lan (it assumes anything in its config to be a name and not an IP address!)) so what I thought I could do was to add the relevant name and IP address to my /etc/hosts file and after a restart any request for the defined host name would be returned the IP address from the hosts file. However this is not working. I have added a line in hosts :-

192.168.0.8 weather.com

which I thought should work.

Can some one please help? What have I done wrong?

Seeking advice from a network admin

Greetings!

I have a number of books that cover some parts of how to set up some pieces of networks. What I do not have is the bigger view of networking, as it would apply in a home set up or a very small business with just two or three computers in either case. I am thinking I would like to have one central box be like a file server where the other boxes could store files. In the past I have set up NFS for Linux boxes and Samba for any Windows boxes. Should I be using something else - NIS, FTP, ...??

Another problem I face is that I would like to avoid using hard-code (static?) IPs for the machines. My modem/router/switch issues IPs dynamically. I am not sure what to do to address the boxes by name. Do I need to set up DNS?

I realize that the services and types of servers to be set up are dependent upon the topology of the network. I would very much appreciate sort of a general run-down on a few common scenarios.

Thank you!

Remmina 1.0 - How to Install on Fedora 16

Hi Everyone,

I am running Fedora 16. I want to use Remmina to get to Remote Desktop Connection Windows System. I have installed 0.9.3 and I successfully get connected, however, I am unable to copy/paste data between my Linux and the Windows remote system.

There is a Ubuntu bug opened and fixed for this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...na/+bug/937522 . Where would I find the Fedora fix for Fedora 16?

I've tried to install Remmina 1.0.0 to see if that would fix this, but the only version I could fine with Remmina 1.0.0 is for Fedora 17 and it wouldn't install due to freerdp dependency issues.

I tried to compile it myself, but the directions in the README are only for Ubuntu and couldn't get past the CMAKE.

Thanks for any help...

KDE randomly freezes, NVIDIA driver at fault?

I'm on FC16, using KDE 4.8.3 and for the past several weeks, I have been having problems with KDE randomly freezing or logging me out without warning. Needless to say that this is very annoying and I have lost some work because of it. I have been having these problems on my desktop machine, which has an NVIDIA GPU. My laptop is installed the same way but does not have problems. It has an Intel GPU. Further, I believe my problems started when moving to version 295.49-1 of the NVIDIA proprietary driver.

First, the relevant information of my system:

I've been monitoring /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors for clues but so far I have failed to come up with anything conclusive. I did find messages such as these in /var/log/messages which seem to coincide with X crapping out:

Code:

May 12 17:10:27 deepthought kernel: [172119.249950] NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.

May 12 17:10:27 deepthought kernel: [172119.249956] NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.

Right after these messages, KDE freezes completely, except for the mouse pointer which continues to move. The system itself is still running though. I can ssh in from another machine and top tells me that X is putting one CPU on 100%. A reboot is the only way to regain a working desktop.

Google tells me that the above error can be resolved by enabling "Persistence Mode" in the NVIDIA driver like so:

Code:

# /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1

This seems to have stopped KDE from freezing completely but it still boots me to the login screen every now and then.

I am also seeing this in /var/log/messages at times, which coincides with me getting booted out of my session:

Code:

May 13 14:33:35 deepthought kernel: [76223.746031] NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

May 13 14:33:37 deepthought kernel: [76225.746120] NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

Google has been unable to enlighten me as to what these messages mean, just as these messages:

Code:

Switching my system to the Nouveau driver, yields a stable desktop at the expense of not being able to play 3d accelerated games, of course. Gnome 3 also seems to be unaffected but I haven't used that extensively so I can't be certain.

I have found this thread http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1574003? but the problem with KDE happen without a video player running. It even happens on switching a tab in Firefox.

Any ideas on how I can get my stable desktop back?

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - Loki Games

Hello all,

I managed to install and get running this game in Fedora 14 using this install script: http://www.liflg.org/?catid=7&gameid=90

Then using this script to run the original Alpha Centauri:

Code:

cd INSTALL_DIR

LD_PRELOAD=./Loki_Compat/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so:./Loki_Compat/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0 ./smac.dynamic

And this one for Alien Crossfire:

Code:

cd INSTALL_DIR

LD_PRELOAD=./Loki_Compat/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so:./Loki_Compat/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0 ./smacx.dynamic

Of course INSTALL_DIR is replaced for your installation directory.

I have one problem though! When discovering new tech the mp3 voice overs, found in ./data/voices, do not play. Which is sad, as it is one of the most defining parts of the game.

Any ideas?

echo "This is an test email message"> $message

/bin/mailx -s "$subject" "$to"

I also tried by running sendmail but still same problem.

Any help?

Thanks.
